Why not an ottb

Hee hee I resemble those remarks.

Here’s an old pic of my absolute best OTTB ever. She was a 1987 model, 38 starts, had an ugly ankle and a club foot, not to mention that straight hind end conformation, and she never took a lame step in her life. She horse showed, evented, foxhunted, would jump through fire, and to this day I’ve never sat on a better canter than hers.

Yep a crochet pommel pad- white and blue! I loved it. I did own a couple lollipop pads but I can’t tell if he’s wearing one.
@Bristol_Bay - no Navajo pad. I didn’t have one but desperately wanted one. Perhaps that’s the reason for my 90’s teenage scowl…

He is 16.1.

Lol!! I love his barn name and think it suits him.

Do you mind telling us more about some of Hollywood’s kids? How do Akita and Renge compare to their older brothers?

(Do you mind all the questions? I just love seeing your updates on FB! I live for Ninja updates but love seeing the girls, too. Something about a nice TB mare just pulls my heart-strings.)

Full chaps, Navajo pad, no helmet…the good old, comfortable days indeed.

Akita aka “At Heart” (Feb 2020 f Saketini - Shezagreatgal) is smaller (16h) and more compact than the other siblings. Good balance, nice shoulder and good hip, but in a smaller package. She was a very independent foal, and same as an adult. Great mind, easy to start under saddle, easy to start over fences. The type of horse you can trust to make good choices. She was sold as a hunter in fall of 2023, but was with me for training until May 2024. Jumps really cute, but probably doesn’t have the drive/talent for true upper levels. I see her growing up to be a nice children’s/am hunter or 1.10m jumper. She is quiet and straightforward to develop into a nice packer type.

Taco aka “At The Right Time” (Feb 2021 f Saketini - Bella Veloche / Sightseeing) was sold as a hunter prospect early this spring. Feminine and refined filly, lighter bone Saketini’s other foals (so is her mother), probably finish growing at 16.1. She was also a very straightforward, independent type of filly. Super work ethic, easy to start, born broke mentality. I gave her 5 rides and put her on the back burner. Came back two months later exactly where she left off. Soft mouth, great balance, I really thought she’d be more suited for dressage and eventing (very elegant type!) but she’s versatile and jumps with enough style to do well in local level hunters.

Both those fillies were bought by different people who had WBs that turned out to be difficult, complicated, unsound, or lacked work ethic. The buyers were looking for a pleasant, TB type of ride, but hesitant to go the OTTB route with unknown physical injuries and mental tension. Akita passed a full PPE including beautiful neck/back xrays. Taco was bought without a vetting, owner trusted her eye for soundness and was buying a young 3yo with no wear and tear.

Renge “At Or Above” (Jan 2023 f Saketini - Bella Veloche) is probably my nicest filly yet. She is very smart, independent with a strong desire to please. Her mother had a border collie mindset…intense work ethic!..and this filly is similar. Very good mover with great balance and elasticity and shows some talent in the jump chute. She’s bigger framed than her full sister Taco (Taco was a maiden foal), and likely to mature around 16.2. She started ground driving in mid October and I just sat on her for the first time last week. Her third ride was today; I get on her without help, walk/trot in the roundpen, open the gate myself, and rode out with a babysitter to one of the fields. Hacked around there for five minutes, walk/trot up the little hill, and rode back to the barn. Another amazing mind and work ethic. She’s a little sharper than the other fillies; not in a bad way, just a natural sensitivity and drive that will develop nicely into an upper level horse. She’ll get about 7 more rides and then a few months off, and spend her 2 year old year with occasional hacks around the farm and trail rides off property. This is one I really want to keep for myself (if I can, financially!), I think she will be a big time horse.

I’ve only read a few threads on the breeding forum but I remember someone had a tb stallion that was outstanding. It’s nice to see tb’s being bred for jumping.

I still have one of my Navajo blankets. Love it. Now it’s on my ottoman in the house.

I saw the video you posted of her on FB, where you had her in the round pen a spell and then hacked out, opened a gate, and finished outside. She looks lovely. I really like what you’ve shared of her dam too (I loved Sightseeing so much).

That video reminded me what I loved about starting (most of) the babies - the listening ears and how much they listen to your guidance! Lol

Maybe you’re thinking of A Fine Romance? He’s the first to come to my mind. His owner was Fred here on COTH.

Semi tangential, but I’ve never seen Grey Dawn anywhere but my guy’s papers!

I had one, a homebred. He was a lovely horse with a great mind - willing to try anything.

I have Grey Dawn on one of my guy’s [pedigrees] (https://www.pedigreequery.com/dash+with+sass). What are the initials BI mean under Grey Dawn’s name?

That’s interesting, I’ve never paid attention to the B and BI designations.

Sigh.
