Why the tilted hat covers?
Eh - no, I would argue it IS more of a recent trend.

Back in the 80’s and 90’s when I did the bulk of my eventing, you did not see as many people with their helmet covers like THIS that is seen so often today.

Heck - they even advertise helmets with the cover on all wonky now. (CO seems all about making sure that their logo is still visible).

Nope - “back in my day” (hahahaha) most wore their covers like THIS.

And some riders still wear theirs this way - a rubber band helps.

I have honestly never seen a brim flip down over the face - they are pretty short, I can’t picture it happening.

I personally like the old school way, I think the extremely flipped up brims (cover partially off) look odd - but to each their own.
I could not agree more. Even in the picture of Denny that Bikoman posted, the helmet cover does not completely cover the skull cap, leaving a gap between the edge and the brim of about an inch or so, but the brim is not drastically flipped up like the current style. This is much how mine is - the CO cover is not large enough to completely cover my skull cap from front to back and shows about an inch gap, but the brim is straight and stays put.

I plan to order a custom cover at som point in the future, and hope that it will cover completely as is shown in the old style pictures you posted. That is how my mother’s cover looked in the 70s when she evented.

Exactly! The “brim” on the skull covers feels like a thin piece of cardboard with fabric over it… not exactly something that should factor as an issue in a fall.

Meh… I guess I’m just a modern day old school rider.

Mine’s flipped up a little (but not pushed back) because it literally points down if I leave it the way it is… but I also have one of the generic lycra CO covers with a large-ish brim that doesn’t sit normally anyway!

IMO when it’s shoved back halfway up the helmet and flipped (à la Laine Ashker), it looks weird.

Now, I AM all for bringing the pompom back… ;)
I came in right after the pompoms, I’d love to see them come back…maybe even some tassels!

My cover is the one that came with the helmet (CO) and it does not fit all the way down. There is about an inch gap. The brim won’t stay down over the helmet, it always flips up. If the cover went all the way down to the edge it would probably stay down.

So my brim is flipped up because the helmet manufacturer decided that’s how the cover would fit. I ignore it and just ride, not trying to be fashionable.
Well then, shoudn’t the brim be worn on the back? Skull cap wearers, I dare you.
I would so do this, just to see the looks I’d get…maybe I could start a new trend.

FWIW, the Hoys (when they were together) brought back the pom poms for a while… I thought it was hilariously awful, but it did make them very recognizable.

I’m not trendy at all. I just wear my tipperary and no helmet cover.

Nobody’s mentioned yet that it’s what they do in England, and therefore it must be a trend to be followed…
I think you have a point! I blame this guy!! hahha

Oh yours looks lovely, they do fit a bit above the brim usually, but thats much different than pushing it 1/3 of the way up the helmet.

I am actually curious as to how they stay ON when pushed that far back!

OP, thank you for asking this. I was wondering the same thing after seeing a kid work very hard to make sure her helmet cover flipped up just right.

Seriously, though, I wear mine tipped up just a bit. If you click my blog link (below), the picture at the top shows a pretty good side shot of it. And, I maintain, if the brim was down it would interfere with my line of sight.

Of course, I CANNOT STAND for a brim to obstruct my view no matter which helmet I’m wearing, so I’m probably a bit sensitive to the idea. Some of the ones I see are a tad ridiculous, I’ll agree with that!

I always thought they just wanted to show off the CO logo for whatever reason.

What I had been told about skull caps, is that they are designed with the flexible brim (whether worn flipped up or level), is that if you get lawn darted into the ground, that the visor will give, rather than be hard like a normal helmet, hopefully not causing secondary issues like breaking your neck due to the visor catching on the ground.

Not sure how people came up with them being flipped up or flat but that is the reasoning I had heard behind having the helmet cover/flexible visor rather than a helmet with the permanent visor!

On my skull cap mine tends to be about level because of how the cover fits the helmet/the hat band. But it also kind of depends on how it has been sitting in my helmet case and if it has developed a mind of it’s own!

I must admit I checked to make sure mine was flipped up on my way to XC last show so I didn’t look like a dork. I certainly have no need for speed at my level.

If you’ve ever accidentally scraped your hand on an un-covered CO skullcap, you will know the answer to this question.

I have the standard black (I think it’s the Pro II, maybe?) skull cap and uncovered, that thing is a torture device. It has actually drawn blood. The cover has elastic but the material itself “sticks” to the coarse stuff on the outside of the shell!

Call me old school, but I think the helmet covers tilted halfway up the skull cap look really stupid. I wear mine with the brim in the same position as the brim on my dressage/stadium helmet, same way I’ve worn it since the late 80’s.

Do please take pictures.

Mine just has ridden up that way. I actually like the old school way, but I am not so worried about it that I am going to fuss over it. Meh.

^^^This. SO much this. The trend is not so much for the brim to point up, but for the WHOLE DAMN COVER to be tilted up. If you’re only going to cover half you helmet, why not paint the thing and forgo the cover all together?

count me in the group who thinks it looks totally stupid.
retarded even.

they do it to 1. show a logo and 2. to show XC colors. Now those dang helmets come in an assortment of colors.

I’m old fashioned I guess.
My brim is normal and I never see it. It never gets in my way. It won’t be dangerous in a fall because it’s not attached to the helmet.

So I definitely wasn’t thinking of the brims half way up the helmet when I read this post! I don’t wear mine like that and think it looks funny. I have my cover pulled down to the edge of my helmet, so same place as the cover in the photo above, but I give my brim a little flick with my fingers so it tilts ups!
