I hear you, but I scrolled back quite awhile and the page and types of posts seemed pretty consistent. Nothing posted publicly that would have raised red flags for me in my cursory scrolling… and with a lifetime in the horse industry, I’d like to think my eye for these things is above average. It’s possible she may have scrubbed it clean this week, but still, she has a whole lot of consistently normal looking horse posts.

I’m not defending or denying. I was just surprised by the public inconsistency; there definitely has to be some sort of back story.

Yes it doesn’t sound like this is a case of wholesale neglect of a whole herd.

Yes and sometimes you have those folks that their own horses look great. The leased ones aren’t being cared for. Had that happen to me as a child when my father had a fellowship at a university and we moved for a year. I am older now and more suspicious of people.

I’m not sure where you get “instead of putting it in a field.” The photo shows a horse in a clean deeply bedded stall. Pretty much 100 % sure that’s after rescue. IME the worst neglect cases often involves horses that are on pasture out of sight out of mind and the grass doesn’t hold up, either winter snow or summer drought.

I meant if they had no money to feed they could at least provide grass. That’s all. And the clean stall may be an “after” ?

I always forget that when i eventually get around to reading responses to my posts that it revives the thread. That was not my intention. I understand that the new COTH policy is to not discuss pending cases. I wish I could delete it .

My point was that many starvation cases happen because a horse is on a pasture that fails, either in winter snow or in summer drought, or gets grown over by unpalatable weeds. Just providing grass is not that easy if your place is overgrazed or the local weather conditions are working against you. Also people can think the horse is doing OK, not pay attention, and then suddenly they’ve gone two weeks on a starvation diet.

I don’t think there is any policy prohibiting discussion of pending cases. My understanding is that the new comments are to require personal criminal accusations to be accompanied by the poster’s real name. Opinions about the crime or about criminals who commit such crimes are allowed. So I can say that Holly Stanley was arrested and that she was charged with animal cruelty because those are facts from a news source.

I can also post a question, such as, “Why would someone starve a pony instead of placing it in a field?” or an opinion, such as, “That woman must be sick and demented.” I can say, “Those ponies were old and deserved a wonderful retirement,” because the first part is a statement of fact and the second is an opinion. I can also wonder about different situations and speculate about the situation, AND I can comment about starvation in general, its causes, and some situations which seem to happen regarding starvation situations. In short, everything that has been discussed in this thread is fine. What I can’t say, unless I post my real name, is that I witnessed Holly Stanley committing a specific cruel act (which I did not because I do not know the woman).

If I am misunderstanding the COTH standards, please set me straight.

A partial quote of the update regarding criminal allegations(shown at the top of the page) highlights the policy:

When it came to overt criminal allegations, however, those discussions have in the past needed to stem from a report by a reputable news source or action by law enforcement or the legal system.

We are now expanding our policies to allow posters to share their own first-hand experiences involving overt criminal allegations, such as animal abuse or neglect, theft, etc., but only if they publicly provide their full first and last name along with the post. We still will not allow anonymous postings alleging criminal activity.

So, a user may now make a specific claim against a named individual or company, but it must be a FIRST-HAND account, and they have to IDENTIFY THEMSELVES.
