Will hair grow through a sarcoid?

My new(ish) horse has a quarter-sized hairless spot that seems to be getting larger (dime-sized last fall when I got him).

It might be an occult/flat sarcoid, but as a precaution, and before we look at imiquimod, my vet suggested panalog. I don’t want to biopsy because if it is a sarcoid, I don’t want to irritate it.

I have applied panalog daily for a couple weeks, and it now appears that hair is now growing in the spot.

Folks think it looks like it is improving, but it might just be because his winter coat is coming in. Has anyone experienced hair growing in a sarcoid?

Sort of? Maybe? LoL. My current horse had a flat one on her shoulder a little bigger than a quarter. We treated with Xxxterra and as it healed the hair grew back a bit weirdly - not just from the outer edges like you might expect with a wound. It takes a sharp eye to find it now - there is a small outline of hair that grows in a very slightly different direction to the hair around it.

Ah! Well maybe that hair I see growing through is a good sign and Panalog is working? Which makes me think it must not be a sarcoid, as I don’t think Panalog works on sarcoids…

Did you use the Xxterra “herbal paste” that you can get online?

Thx!

Paste from my vet. It was years ago so I don’t know if was even available online then. I would not choose to use it again if I could avoid it. There are other less uncomfortable potions to try first.

Forgot to mention that it was biopsied so it was confirmed sarcoid. Treatment started as soon as the punch hole was healed so it didn’t really have a chance to get angry and go ballistic.

That would be our next step - biopsy and be prepared to treat. Imiquimod is the only other potion I know of that is topical. I saw some articles on Aldera – which seems really caustic – and acyclovir, which seems unproven.

Some people have had good luck with frankincense oil, and if you do a search here, there is apparently some homemade potion that you can get the recipe for from someone for free.

I have looked around a lot. I think all the homemade potions are salt/flour based. I wish I knew if they worked… but the imiquimod has an 80% success rate and is used for human genital warts (!!), so I figure it can’t be that caustic.
