Will he be Bay or Black? - Max Updates

Max keeps growing like a weed! Hopefully he doesn’t get too big. He’s smart but independent and full of sass. He also has to have his mouth on everything. Here are pictures from this week and a couple short videos. The last one he laid down, started to roll, and then decided a nap sounded better.

Max is absolutely perfect! Love his videos/pictures.

The last video made me giggle. I guess the sun felt good.

He sure is looking good! I hope you keep on updating us.

Rather than make a new thread I figured I just keep adding Max updates to this one. He’s getting harder to take good videos of, he sees you pull out the camera and wants to come see what it is. He continues to grow like a weed and absorb new things like a sponge. He’s less reactive than he was but no less bold and sure of himself. Fortunately he’s learning manners from the rest of the herd and me. The whole herd is back together now and the poor pony is his favorite victim since she isn’t as quick to bite his butt as the others. But before you feel too bad for her, know that she comes and finds him and starts stuff part of the time. She’s also designated herself and nap guardian for him.

Max keeps growing and thriving. He loves being curry combed and will do almost anything for scritches. He really wants to show his appreciation by grooming you back, but man those teeth hurt, so we’re working on establishing where his teeth are allowed and not. Fortunately he’s usually good and only pushes the boundaries occasionally. He also loves to run laps while I ride mom. He’s not panicked in the slightest, me riding is just a really good excuse for zoomies. Once he’s tired he hangs out at the barn and watches.

Now he needs a registered name, any suggestions or thoughts?
He’s 1/2 Arab 1/2 Friesian. His sire’s name is Major Mac V and his dam’s name is Lyra von Morningstar. Obviously his barn name is Max which suits him to a t.
Ideas we’ve had are:
Macs Chaos (he was born on the night that caused the biggest disruption of plans)
Macs Midnight Storm (he was born at the end of the big solar storm)
Macs Midnight Flare
Major Flare
Macs Morningstar

Oh, goodie, time to name the babies!! This is what I came up with from reading about the constellation Lyra

Macs Constellation
Macs Vega (Vega is the brightest star in the constellation Lyra)
Macs Alpha Lyrae (Latin name for the star Vega)
Macs Starlight
Vega Major
Macs Brightest Star

Also, oh my squee is he precious!

Much appreciated for the suggestion, I hadn’t thought to look up the constellations.

He definitely thinks he’s hot stuff. Fortunately for me he’s also sweet and incredibly smart. He tries very hard to be good though he is a boy.

He’s absolutely GORGEOUS! What a perfect colt! You must be so incredibly pleased with him!!

Thanks! I am absolutely thrilled with him. This cross has turned out fantastic so far. He’s got this super lofty slow canter and then a high gear. He also thinks lead changes are fun and loves to jump everything. It’ll be fun watching him grow up.

“That line forms on the right, dear, now that Mackie’s back in town” is my absolute favorite line from that song!

On the naming front it looks like there are a decent number of Arabs and half Arabs that have Vega or Constellation in their names. Also there are also a few Major Stars, including a 3/4 Arab 2024 Major Mac colt. Mack the Knife is interesting but doesn’t quite seem to fit.
The stallion owner likes him enough that we will be adding a V to the end of his name to help carry on the Varians tradition.
At the moment we have:
Macs Chaos V (also fun because I’m a physical chemist but not sure if it’s asking for it by naming him chaos)
Macs Midnight Flare V
Major Flare V
Macs Midnight Star V
Macs Brightest Star V

Any other suggestions? Naming is hard and my husband so far is just rolling his eyes at everything I have come up with.

Ok, back to the naming board.

Mac’s Interstellar V
Mac’s Starlight (or Starlit) V
Mac’s Astron V (Astron is ancient Greek for constellation)
Mac’s Bright Aster V
Mac’s Celestial V(iew)
Mac’s Luminary V
Mac’s Superstar V
Mac’s Stargazer V
Mac’s Erethreal V
Mac’s Starlit Valtz (vs Waltz)

OH! What a lovely compliment!! That’s pretty cool.

MAJ Morningstar V

(MAJ is abbreviation for military version of Major)

Welcome to the party! Every time I look at the V brand on my two year old filly, I want to pinch myself.

As for names, I like Macs Midnight Flare V or Macs Midnight Star V.

Thanks! I’ve definitely been part of the V club for a while. The gelding I grew up with was Festivity Bey V, a Bay El Bey son. Once he gets his brand next year Max will be our third with a V brand at home. We have had Rowena V for 12 years and just brought home Fatima Fame V on Tuesday. I wasn’t sure about adding the V to a half Arab, but talking to Angela and Kristy they both really like him and think he would be a good addition to the Varians legacy so that’s what we’ll do.

Macs Midnight Flare V and Macs Midnight Star V are the votes from some of my family as well. Does Midnight work for a dark bay? It would work well for a black horse, but he definitely isn’t going to be black.

Eh, I knew one that ended up going sort of gray/blue roan, so… :woman_shrugging: Bay is closer than he turned out to be and you’ve got the pedigree explanation. The one I knew was born at midnight.
