I agree with everything you said. Doesn’t change the fact that euthanasia costs money, and sending a horse to auction does not. What people should do is often different than the reality.

Trudeau has just released a statement on X.
Tariffs are paused for 30 days, and Canada will enact a number of measures to combat concerns regarding border security and fentanyl.
So everyone can calm down. No tariffs on equines. For now.
Hopefully less fentanyl in all of North America.
On to Tuesday.

I’m not calming down until Elon Musk and his teeny boppers are kicked out of the USAID office and some sense of normalcy is returned This was just a distraction from all the illegal happenings that Trump and Elon are currently perpetrating against all Americans.

This tactic of threatening tariffs (although he did promise tariffs during his campaign) is bullying. He learned it from Roy Cohn…
We Americans don’t like to be bullied…but suddenly it’s okay if we bully other countries? I think not.
Fentanyl is a terrible problem but tariffs are NOT the answer. That’s like saying: hey there is a problem with alcohol and addiction. Let’s put a tariff on dairy products.
I will tell you right now as a business owner and manufacturer, we import a lot from Canada (nothing from Mexico). We as a company cannot absorb a 25% tariff. We will have to pass it on to consumers.
If you think that American businesses can suddenly tool up and provide the parts, pieces, and tools needed for American goods, you are about to get hit with a huge dose of reality.
I will never agree with a policy of strong-arming and bullying our allies, hurting American companies, and pissing off the rest of the world.

Can you just start a new thread in Off Topuc if you want to talk about other topics that really aren’t related AT ALL to the import or export of equines and potential complications related to tariffs?

Except it was about the tariffs.
These tariffs were a DISTRACTION. That’s how he operates. Flood everyone with chaos so he can continue to do whatever he wants while everyone is looking the other way. This was never about tariffs in the first place.
And with that I’m done engaging with you. But these tariffs were definitely a distraction from what’s really going on in America right now with Elon and Trump. And they are breaking the law. Left and right. He had everyone talking about tariffs while Elon swept in and gained access to everyone’s Ss numbers and private information.

Looks like Trump and Trudeau made a deal. This is from Trudeau. “Just had a productive call with President Trump. Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan — strengthening the border with new helicopters, technology, more personnel, increased coordination with our U.S. partners, and more resources to combat fentanyl trafficking. Nearly 10,000 agents are and will be on the ground to protect our border.
Plus, Canada is taking new commitments. We’re going to appoint a Tsar in charge of the fentanyl issue, add Mexican cartels to the list of terrorist entities, ensure we keep an eye on the border 24/7 and launch, with the U.S., a joint crime strike force. organized, fentanyl trafficking and money laundering. I also signed a new intelligence directive that focuses on organized crime and fentanyl that will be backed by a $200 million investment.
The proposed customs tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together on this.”
Uh… it’s called negotiating.
He ran on securing the border and stopping the flow of undocumented migrants and fentanyl that was coming over the border.
He used obvious economic leverage, and got an agreement with both neighboring countries to commit resources to helping further his agenda of securing the border.
It’s pretty basic.
The important news as pertains to THIS thread is that people involved in the equine related economy in Canada and the US? They won’t have to deal with tariffs for now.
Most people consider this good news.

Yep, you are dead right. The bullying tariff distraction let Elon do whatever he wanted with his equally unqualified help at USAID, sending emails at all hours to 600+ employees to stay home/not work, locking some out of their machines.

Something tells me the latent threat of upending our economy and ruining our diplomacy via tariffs is bad for democracy and domestic peacekeeping. It’s a reckless and irresponsible means of negotiation. It’s maintaining control the way a lunatic with a gun on a subway car maintains control.

@Moderator_1 - this thread has turned very political.
It was started in the eventing forum to talk about potential tariffs on imported horses. So there was considerable discussion of tariff policy.
But it has now strayed. To general politics. Lots of it.
Can you clarify where the line should be in political discussion on the eventing forum? How much is acceptable vs how much is too far off topic?

Anytime anything unfavorable to the orange God is mentioned it’s political. But yet I’ve seen plenty of political posts over the past few days and I have not reported them. Because it’s stupid to run to the mods just because you don’t like what someone is saying or don’t like hearing the truth, in this instance.
But my point was absolutely related - these tariffs were a distraction for what I stated. If she wants to argue it’s unrelated, whatever.

I can’t keep track whether we need tariffs to boost domestic production, or whether they’re a bad move only unleashed for negotiating purposes. That kind of flip-flop is destabilizing, and postponing them doesn’t fix anything.
Those affected will not know how to plan for the future (equestrians included, given this is an expensive sport) with that kind of economic shakiness.

I do flag comments when I feel the need to flag a comment.
This thread has turned entirely political for many many posts. It’s in the Eventing forum. It’s not in Off Topic or Off Course.
I’d like clarity from the mods on where the line is with political discussions. They told us all to stop discussing politics, then allowed some in Off Topuc, and now it’s politics all over the place.
I would like some clarity…
