Will you horse show?

Opening of society and everyone going “back to normal” (and many are) is either going to skyrocket number of cases or it will stay pretty level. I don’t think Americans (and yes I’m singling us out) are prepared to be as responsible as many would idealistically like us to be. I don’t think until the virus hits home for parents with kids, or (sorry to get political) your favorite politician/talking head, people are going to think past themselves. There are too many people saying “I haven’t been effected by the virus personally or interpersonally, so it’s fake”.

National Review is a conservative site, not a scientific site.

Use science and experts, not what fits your narrative.

Texas just added * 25 yesterday, US added 1,705 deaths.

Georgia added +23 deaths, to 1,517.

Remember- it is a 7 day moving average so have not necessarily caught up. THere is a lag time in between when the case was tested and or/reported.

The cases “are not as bad” ----- yet.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for an interagency briefing last week said Georgia’s intensive care unit beds were 79% full on May 6, based on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

I just can’t. Pirate- you obviously have your narrow view point. But for the love of everything- read SCIENCE and not conservative or liberal site to get your information.

i actually got this off of yahoo news and had no idea it originated with National Review.

And Florida just ‘opened’ Monday, so not enough time, and Georgia reports the previous 14 days in their data as fluid. I think the most valuable information would be the rate of hospitalizations.

Well my company just announced major pay cuts (after already cutting some of the retirement benefits), and I’m still full time busy and need to stay that way, so it’s looking even less likely that I will show especially while current income is not only down but future income is questionable.

I know an infectious disease doctor very well who is in contact with the CDC. He told a bunch of us about the third week of March; ‘postpone what you can, stay away from people as much as you can, wash and/or disinfect frequently. This is the Real Deal.’

As far as horse shows…I can avoid people, be generous with social distance, being out in the open air, again washing hands and carrying around a towel/hand sanitizer for the occasional door knob, I can handle all that. Port-o-Johns might be a deal breaker for me, but I would show locally going to my own house at night. Going away? And order take out and eating in a hotel (after I sanitize the whole room a zillion times) by myself for 3 minutes of fun in a ring? Nah.

When it comes to information about a pandemic, getting your news from Yahoo is like reading a supermarket tabloid.

For medical information go to medical authorities for your education about the pandemic. The internet makes this easy.

I don’t understand why some people won’t bother with proper research when it is a life and death situation, not only for themselves, but for others as well.

Warm up was today for first show back. We had to enter online - no entries allowed at show and no number, no warm up. You contacted show secretary to schedule a general schooling time as they have limited numbers of horses in the rings at the same time. We parked the trailer far away from others. Only one representative from barn may enter the office to pay and only one at a time at the end of the show. You have option to pay by credit card if you prefer not to go to office. We did get two stalls for tomorrow - they are blocking stalls so there are spaces between barns to limit contact. I feel very comfortable.

nycjumper - did riders wear masks? Going to a show in mid-June and curious how that will work.

Riders aren’t wearing masks nor grooms (not rated so not required). They are required when you enter office or any enclosed area.

No showing this year. Horse is a baby, so this would have been a get-your-feet-wet year anyway. Stay home, back to basics, we have plenty of future.

I do feel badly for the kids in their last junior or young riders year. But there’s a lot of ways to enjoy horses that doesn’t involve competing.

Someone asked how shows were getting around the “gatherings” limit, and I just wanted to update that what I’m seeing is that they are getting approval with no more than the max gathering number in one confined (indoor) area. For instance, in NC, the guidance from the state was that as long as no more than 10 people gathered in a confined area, it is considered ok. In know in VA, at least one show was trying to get approved as an agricultural event, not a social gathering, so that is how they planned to work that.

I was asking about the gathering limit. Thanks for the information.

Here, there has been action by the health officials against crowds in parks and open space areas that have been too large of “gatherings” even though it appears most people attended in small groups…it just added up. So, I don’t see how locally a horse show would get around the max people issue even outdoors.

Deep Run got the no-go from the Dept of Agriculture and were told the sheriff’s office would enforce the limit on the number of people on the grounds so they canceled unfortunately.

I know there is much scientific discussion about the reduced transmission outside, but does anyone wonder why there are scenes in foreign cities where the streets and sidewalks are being disinfected? Do they know something we dont? What science are they basing this procedure of street cleaning?

Some areas are cleaning streets that are really not that sanitary, as there has been studies on fecal shedding if active virus. Alleys are also being sanitized. I do not think scientifically it is an absolute necessity, but some of the areas doing it are hit hard (Brazil, Pisa). Since the virus is showing not to be “as” contagious as influenza on solid surfaces and is not “as” airborne as say- polio- mass sanitation is prob overkill but cleaning up people’s tissues, masks, cups etc (people are pigs) is a good idea- but not a game changer.
