We are well into winter dull drums…So here is a winters eve tale.
Now this is…NOT…my horse…and no names or specifics are spelled out. No dog in the hunt no opinion and not asking what to do…More what do you THINK…
A long time ago I did have a connection to this horse that does link me to him. I received a call from a person inquiring about horses past legitimate recorded show record and I gave the information asked. Along with horses original owner/trainer contacts.
Person said they were contemplating buying horse…Hmmmm I happened to know the horse had recently been sold by his original, owner who about a year ago came upon the horse who had fallen Thur the cracks …most likely due to down turn in economy. Horse was a high maintenance Prima Donna and at one time a expensive show, horse. They bought him, shipped, him home and Horse was nursed back to health but wear n tear had taken it’s toll and he clearly was not going back to a peak show career. They just sold, him for a Very nominal sum to a person who made it clear if they were given the opportunity to purchase, the horse for a lesser sum they would be giving him a forever home as their personal horse. Not a re sale, they knew he was pretty much past a high end show career. Seller/Owner is not naive or a novice Babe in the woods.
Ha! Less than 3’week in horse is listed on well know sites for sale at over 6x’s the purchase price, and seller is using personal private owned photos of Original Owner/ trainer showing horse. ( they had emailed them so they could see what he USED to do) no permission was given. Horses show name was easy to research his career link which lead him to me by potential, buyers.
The latest interest buyer had contacted both me and his old owner.
They asked what he was sold for as showing horse…and what he lastly was sold for…and as what in the way of a career.
Current owner seller also neglected,to share some salient health soundness issues…which I and then they to felt we should NOT get into. Since he is no longer owned by original, owner.
Seller is told by Buyer they researched and obtained horses prior show history as well as a Valuation by a Equine Appraiser. Horse is not worth anywhere near what current owner wants. Current owner/Seller Refused a very generous offer. Now Current/Owner Seller has communicated with original, owner, they will destroy, his registration papers to prevent anyone from tracking down his past…of course, they then will, have to change his name and loose his past show/training record which looses, his perceived high price tag. Oh and she won t sell, horse back except for,the immensely inflated price tag.
So Oh Wise COTHer s…have fun…I have no clarifications , no desire to do anything beyond share a tale …
Ehhh, what kind of “fun” do you expect us to have? Dishonest horse seller, hardly earth-shattering. Sadly, barely interesting.
Unless you wanna name names. Then the fun might start.
Heartbreaking for the horse that the current seller is an unethical asshat, but sadly it’s hardly new to the horse world.
ETA: here’s a possible argument for microchipping, even if the papers are destroyed, a microchip with at the very least the horse’s name and registry info would stay with him. First step in a PPE, beep, confirm horse is so-and-so. Which would require a vet to have microchip scanner, etc, etc, but wouldn’t it be nice to have an extra layer of protection to keep horses like this from falling through the cracks?
Are you talking about the horse Details in black and white??? I heard horse was bought back by owner and then sold to a forever home!!!
I have one of those. Contacted original trainer and he was pretty pissed. Nothing to be done for it though.
It’s called hoss-tradin’ and is older than the world. Such shenanigans go on every single day. If you want to keep control of where your old horse goes, who has him and what’s done with him, you need to retain ownership. It’s that simple.
Read the “Gracia Finds Her Way Home” story on COTH linked at right for a further cautionary tale–at least this was one of the lucky ones.
