My skirt is pretty well the same as Missus’s, and it’s good to -20 Celsius (-4F) - any colder than that and my face freezes so I’m not riding!
You are all much hardier souls than I! I wimp out at about 30 degrees. Any colder than that and I can’t keep my hands warm.
Some nights are hard but if I want to keep my guy going (even if it’s just walking) I do what I gotta do . Lol maybe it helps I keep my house at about 15C so when I’m out at the barn layered up I’m nice and warm
The riding skirt should keep you plenty warm and hide your pants nearly 100%. I typically wear my riding skirt with Kerrits windpro breeches and the most you can see while mounted is my boots. The skirt is SO much warmer than I thought and I love that I have so much more mobility in it vs layering more pants on. Mine is not heavy like another poster mentioned, and it attaches via Velcro so it’s adjustable. Mine has loops at the opening to put your legs through so that it doesn’t flap and that keeps me legs nearly completely covered.
@kaya842 I’m curious about a lighter weight skirt. Is your skirt soft shell with fleece lining? Is it wool? Or just a thinner quilted insulation?
I have this one! The top is a nylon shell, such as a turnout blanket, and the underside is quilted polyester type material like the lining of a turnout blanket. It doesn’t appear warm but very much so is and I love that it’s not fleece because it doesn’t pick up hay/ shavings/ hair and doesn’t shock me like my fleece quarter sheet does.
I ride in fleece-lined running pants. When it’s very cold or I’m not riding hard enough to generate warmth, I wear over those pants some old roomy, pleated cotton shorts which, when standing, come down to just above my knees. It’s not as fashionable as a skirt, for sure, but its warm without bulk. Comfortable, too, which is how I end up going places like the post office and grocery store in this get-up and forget how ridiculous I look. Especially when on the ground I add my rainbow-colored leg warmers .
Ha ha well I’m no stranger to that, comfort rules!
This is the one Santa is bringing me!!
Do you have Raynaud’s? I have a mild case of it and the worst part of riding, for me, is grooming / tacking up. I have tried so many different gloves, and none of them cut it for me. However, once I’m on the horse I warm up very quickly IF I can ride at all gaits. Even in 15 F degree weather (my cut off is 10F in the indoor ) I am fine in my fleece lined breeches, 1/2 size too big waterproof leather paddock boots with real wool socks and lots of layers above the waist. If it’s just at a walk forget it, my hands will kill me.
I have this, which I adore, and keeps me warm both doing pony things and xc skiing, hiking, etc. I love it so much I got the longer version this year. I basically live in it on weekends. Look what I found on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/listing/894089576/winter-wool-wrap-skirt-bordeaux-riding?ref=share_v4_lx
I have Raynauds (among other autoimmune issues). I have had great luck with the battery heated gloves and socks from Ororo. I just use the liners because they are the least bulky and they work well enough for grooming and tacking. I’ve ridden in the gloves too and they aren’t too bad (not my preference though).
