Another idea is to look into Redingote Equestrian. I just got mine and it is super warm! I wore it to a Dressage show yesterday and the temps were in the 20’s and I was the only one not complaining that they were cold (which says a lot since it could be 90 degrees out and I’ll be under a blanket). You can do barn chores and ride while staying stylish. It has great features, like a place to hang your spurs, a crop pocket, long zippers behind your leg so you put it on and off with your boots on and has magnets so you don’t have to fuss with snaps or velcro. Here is the link to their website https://www.redingoteequestrian.com/ . If you use promo code MLE40 you can save $40 as well.
@Empressive Award I found the ELT coat you were coveting at my local tack shop. Maybe call around, someone near you might stock it after all. I bought it and it’s SO WARM. It’s ridiculous how warm it is and how many cool features it has.
I actually tried that, without success. I did however go to Dover on small business Saturday and I tried the Dover Parka Riding Jacket, and its AMAZING! Its almost exactly like the ELT. The length covers your thigh, it has 3 zippers, 2 on the sides and 1 in the tail to open and adjust the fit for sitting in the saddle, arm vents, a detachable hood, and its so warm! I used my $100 coupon from the Veteran’s day sale, plus the CSR gave me 25% a Dover brand item coupon, so my jacket cost me a whopping $48!!! Merry Christmas to me! If you all need a winter jacket to ride in, go get this jacket from Dover!!
I have my eye on this, but I cant justify the expense yet as I dont have barn work to do myself, as I board. And it doesnt look super easy to ride in and I’m unsure my curvy self will fit into the “jumper” style build. I’d love to have one tho, for more than just horses.
I’ve got some Kohl’s cash i earned buying family Christmas gifts that I’m going to spend getting a few pairs of these to wear under my riding clothes for the colder months coming up! thanks for the tip!
I’d skip on the SP jacket. Get this one instead. It’s a little more, but it is worth it.

It has a zipper in the tail to expand the back of the jacket to fit over your bum and saddle when riding. It also has 2 zippers on the side for more adjustment, and its long enough to cover the thigh when mounted. Zip it al back together to stay warm when you are done riding and untacking. The hood is cozy too, but can be removed if you dont use it. It has armpit vents if you get too warm, and has a zipper and magnets in the storm flap to keep wind out. This is almost identical to the jacket I have been coveting that is no longer available here. So worth the money for winter riding and it is plenty warm and large enough to wear several layers if you want.
Sadly they’ve gone up in price a bit now.
With the current 20% off promotion “Give20” (Don’t forget to add this in the discounts at checkout!!)
The turtleneck is now $11.19
Quarter Zip is now $11.19
The Long johns are now $15.19
At this point I would recommend checking WalMart online for the leggings. They’re $9.99 with $5 shipping but in the stores they’re usually $6

Under Armour ColdGear long sleeve shirts. Under Armour ColdGear Tactical Hood. The hoods are great because they are so thin they will under a helmet. Carhart merino wool socks. SSG ten below gloves for general riding. SSG Winter ranchers for fox hunting.
The Under armour stuff is incredibly durable. Because it is so thin you can wear it under hunting clothes and not feel bulky.
I live and ride year round in Vermont. I ride down to 15 degrees (used to be 10…I’ve gotten soft).
My favorite winter things:
- Ariat Bromont winter tall boots
- Noble Outfitters softshell insulated breeches
- Darn Tough socks
- Kastel merino tops (SmartWool also makes nice merino base layers)
I have a Smartpak jacket that I liked in concept but not in execution. It looks great, but it’s too thin and ALL of the zippers have crapped out. All of them. It’s like a 10 minute exercise to zip it up.
I haven’t found any of the riding-specific jackets to be any good in true winter. Down to the 30s, maybe high 20s? Sure. But I’m pretty sure that the equestrian version of cold jacket is intended for people who think it gets chilly after sunset in Wellington. Go to a ski store if you want a true winter jacket.
The one thing I still haven’t solved is gloves. I have small hands and all of the gloves that everyone else seems to love I just can’t use - they’re too thick. The Noble Outfitters 3 Season Perfect Fit gloves are great down to the mid-20s. I’ve had some luck with the Back on Track Liners + some of the cheaper knit riding gloves below that. But honestly, I just keep my hands warm as long as possible, sit on them during the warmup, and resign myself to them being some degree of cold/numb.
OMG a so sorry I never saw this to reply. As it turns out I had to send it back because the zipper was sticky (as many had said in the reviews; had to try for myself though!). I don’t recall anything but a gusset to protect the saddle and block the wind. I ended up getting a similar version from Dover that may have since been discontinued, only this season’s restock will tell. Happy to get you a pic of that if you haven’t already gotten something.
LOL - that’s the one I ended up with!
