Winter Riding Gear- What to wear?

Mountain Horse Rimfrost boots with SmartWool hiking socks.

Irideon Windpro FS breeches with Irideon long johns underneath. They are comfortable without seams and slippery so it’s easy to get breeches over them.

If it’s in the 30s, an Outback jacket with a turtleneck, and a fleece vest under if it dips down into the mid-20s. Below that I got a MH jacket (actually more like a coat) last year that is fantastic. Even in the teens it is plenty warm enough for just a t-neck underneath, and long enough that it covers most of my thighs.

An Irideon Chinchillah headband is light enough to fit under my helmet but keeps the ears warm.

The biggest problem I have is with my hands. SSG lined leather gloves, but they don’t keep all of my fingers warm enough. Have to work on that for next winter.

I have started wearing long leggings under my breeches when it is really cold. My gloves are quite warm and help with my hands not getting cold. Some of the girls wear fleece ear warmer type things (there are some that are thin enough to work with a helmet still). My problem is my toes. I have tried putting on 2 pairs of fairly thick socks with boot socks (3 pairs won’t fit in my boot) and I feel like my toes are on pins & needles still. I am thinking about boots specifically for winter, but I’m cheap so I may just deal with being cold the next few months.

Something like this, with half chaps.

The old ski boot advice is go with a THINNER sock, not a thicker one that takes up all the room in your boot. You need to heat up the air around your foot and the boot. That being said, there is cold that seeps up through the ground and makes our toes cold and that needs addressing. There are footbeds that you can put in your boots to provide a barrier against the cold. Yak-Trax makes a thermal footbed for about $7. SuperFeet makes one with nice arch support too, called Red Hot. They help a lot.

Kerrits Sit Tight N Warm Winter breech are my new favourite winter purchase. Fleece lined, very cozy and comfortable to ride in!

Good advice here ^^^

I have discovered that my Bogs boots https://res-2.cloudinary.com/zozi/image/upload/s--XtYAFJLf--/t_detail_zoom/v1/z/p/deals/14098/cinematic_photos/156310/bogs-womens-classic-winter-blooms-high are surprisingly warm in 20F weather, on top of being super comfy for barn chores (I added an arch support leather insole in them so they are even better).
I can ride in them, too

I am waiting for the end of the season so I can buy one of those nice insulated paddock boots on sale.

Mountain horse waterproof trousers. Best thing in the world. Don’t think I’ve taken mine off since Christmas.

My winter go-to has always been silk long underwear and Polartec socks as the base layer. I tend to sweat and the silk wicks it away. The socks are almost 15 years old and they still work great - they were well worth the money!

So an update, yesterday wasn’t as windy, but still chilly. I wore hot chillys, a wicking long sleeved from LLBean and a wool sweater and I was perfect! I then found an old ski jacket from years ago and put it to use again as a cover up for before and after the ride. Although I may still keep the down jacket I got at LLbean  Also smart wool socks and Tropical Rider Fleece Pants. Next up is better winter gloves that you can actually feel the reins in. The SSG -10 are way too bulky and I can’t feel anything! Thanks everyone!!

IMHO `` a polar fleece gator can make a world of difference in comfort !

 • and can be worn many ways and shed off easily ~

I really love my Heritage Summit gloves for winter riding. They are thin enough to have a nice feel on the reins but the material is still extremely warm.
