Wire fencing...so many kinds!

Finish Line…looking at the website, it seems like it’s high tensile, but it’s actually polymer? Does that make it safer than high tensile?

We’ll most likely go with mesh or hot tape at this point, because it WILL be temporary…we’re basically fencing off an area of the yard until we can bush hog and get real fencing around the actual pasture area.

Are there any do’s, don’ts, must-know’s about buying or installing hot tape?[/QUOTE]

Yes, it is polymer, not wire. If it broke it would not wrap around a leg because it goes back to original length, which is quite a bit shorter… it has very high strength though, so not likely to break. Basically if they hit it, they bounce off…

I used white tape electric when I first moved to my farm, because I wasn’t sure where I wanted to end up with them finally. It was great! You can use either a charger that plugs in (you’ll need a adapter for an RV plug) or a solar one. You’ll also have to install a ground. The tape is SO much cheaper than most fences, that I wouldn’t try to cheap out even more with the braided, because its so much less visible. My horses never tested the tape. Now that I’ve put in very expensive poly fencing, they kick it and reach over it.

I like electric tape as long as you maintain it. It needs to stay hot so you need to test it every so often and then walk the line to see if it came loose in a storm or something else. If it isn’t hot young horses quickly push through it for better grass but the plus side is that even if a horse goes through it, you’ll be spending time fixing the fence and not with the vet.

One fairly small female with questionable hammering skills can put up brand new electric fence solo in just a few hours so you save quite a bit on hiring a professional and equipment. You can have someone put the posts in for you, or use existing posts, and they even make extenders if you’re trying to keep horses off existing field or barb wire fence.

I talked to the rep yesterday, I think for my new farm I’m going to do a top line of electric coated high tensile (that’s what’s already there) and then 3 strands below of the Finish Line.

The farm currently only has 3 strands of coated high tensile, so I was going to need to add more anyway. I’ll take the coated high tensile I don’t need from the existing pasture and use it for the top line of the pasture I’m adding.

I really like the finish line but I also like the idea of the coated high tensile at the top, it’s electric and won’t break letting all my horses loose. (hopefully!)
