Womanly-sized riders, unite!

Thanks, everyone, for the great saddle feedback!
The tip about the wider twist makes a lot of sense–I hadn’t thought about that before but it makes sense now I’ve read your post, Pintopiaffe. I’ve also thought of a treeless–I rode once in a treeless trail saddle and fell in love with love with it.
Most of my back pain comes from an old ruptured disc injury that has gotten better over the years but just won’t let me move certain ways or get in certain positions. Sometimes my lower back just hurts. Most of the time riding makes it feel a lot better, but only if I can really soften and sort of round my back and relax. I think a lot about my position when I’m riding, but I think I really need to concentrate on “Is this comfortable?” rather than “Is this ‘correct’?”
The only Passier I’ve tried was an old narrow one (too narrow for both me and my horse). But I’ve looked at some of the new ones, and the Optimum does look and sound like it might be comfortable for womanly sized riders, even ones with short legs, like me.

I love your comment about the hourglass figure with all the sand at the bottom, Everyequine! Is it Louis L’Amour whose characters admire people who have “sand”–as in “true grit”?

snicker hoochie koo

It is nice to hear that you did find boots that fit. I am also shorter than I am wide. hehehehe, well at least in my calves. 16 1/2 around and 15" tall. Unless I am measuring wrong…Makes it very hard to find either boots or half chaps, but I did find a pair of half chaps that are velcro, and they actually seem to fit. They are a bit sloppy, but keep the leathers from biting. I am trying to switch from my western saddle of 30 years and super comfy, to dressage… The switch is not going easily!!

Sounds like you are built about like I am. I have Dublin XL half chaps that actually fit–I was thrilled when I found them! They were about $39.95. I recommend them if your velcro ones ever wear out.
I sympathize with you switching from western to dressage. I keep going back and forth (see my recent question here about dressage saddles). What kind of western saddle do you have? Mine is a Big Horn cordura.

It is a Duncan & Sons Hunter. Made by a company that is in downtown Seattle, and has been making saddles forever, I am thinking more than 100. I believe that most of the PD tack is made there. I have ridden in it for more than 30 years, and I adore it, but I am getting a bit too wimpy to lift it anymore… I bought a dressage saddle on ebay and it is really comfy for me, but I don’t know if it really fits my horse. I need to make a few adjustments to it.

For show ring britches, try different styles (and sizes) of Ariats. Some styles fit me well, some don’t even zip. The side zip Pro Circuits are good for me - pricey, but check eBay. I found all of mine there for no more than $75.

There was also something…I’m thinking it was called Platinum?..that was pretty good. And the high-tech Devonaire fabric (TR10 maybe?) actually looks good on. It’s strong, too – when I impaled myself on the bottom of a jump standard and ended up having a 2" hunk of my butt removed the only thing that saved me from really ripping my a$$ to shreds and getting a major infection was their microfiber - it only got a tiny pinky size hole and prevented contamination of the wound and much more trauma.

I agree that the Equissentials wouldn’t work for “the look.” But then, I may be the only person on earth who HATE them (and hated Anstaad Das way back when) for how the waistband feels. It’s just so loose and they never felt like they were going to stay up on me, so that that with a grain of salt…

I have cream colored full seat Equissentials for dressage shows. They also come in white if that’s what dressage folks prefer.

I know they have a beige color knee-patch style for the H/J crowd - I’m not quite sure what would make them inappropriate for showing?

As far as the waistband is concerned - when you have them custom made (same price as off-the-shelf), they shouldn’t feel too loose, or that they’re going to fall down.

Can you tell that I love them??? I just find them so much more comfortable than other breeches.

Equessentials and why they are a problem for the H/J crowd

“I know they have a beige color knee-patch style for the H/J crowd - I’m not quite sure what would make them inappropriate for showing?”

From my experience with the Equessentials breeches, they tend to be a bit too form fitting for the hunter ring. A bit more like a “riding tight” than the nice crisp Tailored Sportsmen look (which has a little room in the thigh). For the Hunters you really, really don’t want that painted on look.

As a personal dislike, I don’t like the “tights” look or feel. They always feel like they’re going to fall down or roll at the waistband. I like a good waistband with a button. Just a personal preference.

That’s why I bought the Big Horn cordura. It weighs less than my friend’s Niedersuss dressage saddle.
I’ve been riding in a Wintec Isabell dressage saddle but it hurts my back so I’m looking for a dressage saddle with slightly more forward flaps (and a wider twist/seat than the 2000 I tried). The Isabell’s deep seat and synthetic suede seat and flaps make me feel really secure, but it puts my legs too far back (right under my hips, in a good position, but painful).

Sorry I misspelled your name before!

LOL… I didn’t notice that you did!

mountain horse dress boots arrived!

i just posted a new thread about this in this forum, but thought I’d write a quick update here. FINALLY boots to fit my big calves!!! Ordered the new dress boots from Mountain Horse (I wear an 8.5 but ordered size 9, 17" calf). The xw calf supposedly goes up to a 16.9" calf but were totally easy to zip, so I think you could have a larger than 17" calf and be fine in these. They are super comfortable and look great. It was hell finding these (most places I called never even called me back) and I was about to order them from Sweden–fortunately, found a place that got them to me right away. Couldn’t be happier, especially after trying on Ovations that were SO uncomfortable, and being given the run-around by Nittany for weeks.

Glad to hear the great news about your new boots, Ruffian12! I really am happy for you–and hopeful for me, now.
Where did you order them from?
Enjoy them!

i ordered from www.equusunlimited.com. I think the boots just came out this spring, and I contacted pretty much every store on Mountain Horse’s website. They were the only ones to call me back, and were absolutely incredible about rushing to get them to me. They aren’t yet on the webpage, so you might want to give them a call instead.

Here’s the link to a photo and description of the boots:

Hope they work out for you if you decide to go with them.

Oh, and I love my Dublin half-chaps, too!

What about jackets? I am short, so larger sizes are too long in the sleeves! In real life I wear a size 10 jacket to cover my (more than ample) chest, I’d love to find a nice fitting Black jacket to show in that fits over said ample chest but doesn’t look like I am wearing my father’s clothes!

I love the Mountain Horse boots, too as my calves are big…now I need to find a saddle that will fit…

Picasso, will the RJ Classics work for you? What about Grand Prix? Unfortunately my shape has expensive taste! I love the GP coats, because they actually have a cut called…(wait for it…) ENDOWED!!!

ruffian – Where were you going to order them from? Directly from Mountain Horse, or from a store? I want to buy a pair of Mountain Horse boots and the wide calf/foot size combination I need isn’t sold in the US but is sold in Europe (it’s technically a man’s foot size, and they don’t sell the men’s wide calf boots in the US). I was wondering where I might be able to get them from. Do tell…

I ordered them from www.equusunlimited.com, and I found a link to to them on mountain horse’s homepage. I actually called them instead of ordering online. The boot is technically a unisex boot, if that means anything. I wore them yesterday and am loving them so much! Super customer service, too.

Thank you for the info Ruffian, I am going to look into those!

Ware Whip!

Great Thread!

This thread is a favourite for me. As a member of the “older & bigger” club, it’s nice to be able to find info on where to find those “hard to find” size items. I especially enjoy the genuine camraderie that is evident in many of the posts. No snide or arrogant comments. The horse world has a well earned reputation for hosting many of the prima donnas of the world and it’s nice to see a bunch that don’t emulate that attitude. They should set up an entire category for us here at COTH!

Has anyone found a show shirt with a 17" or larger neck?
