Women's winter coats. What do you love?

I just bought one of these - it’s on backorder, but it was also 60% off, so I can live with waiting for a bit. The zipper on my old chore coat broke (during this arctic snap!) so I can’t wait for it to get here and see if it’s as good as the reviewers say.

Not sure if Land’s End is still having their sale, but they had tons of things 60% - 75% off, including outerwear, last week.

Ororo heated apparel! I have a down jacket I adore with heating zones on the neck, upper back, and down by the pockets

I checked their current line and didn’t see anything I loved. I’ll look again!

does it have the elastic cuff at the wrist? I like that plus the ability to snug it up more either via snaps or velcro. I can’t tell from the pics.

that’s very pretty! I have a massive Muddy Creek riding coat that is roomy enough to wear over a good coat, so I definitely can’t justify it. that is a great coat.

I found an old Eddie Bauer down coat at a thrift store for next to nothing and I ride in that through the winter months. It keeps me nice and toasty, and it sits perfect at my hips so it doesn’t impede my riding. I pair that with my riding skirt and wool under clothes. I haven’t found warm socks or gloves, so I finally broke down and spent too much money on bison wool socks to see if those will keep my toes warm. :grimacing:

The ariat rebar coat has adjustable velcro wrists. The LeMiuex one has a stretch wrist seal if you will with a thumb hole but no adjustment. And the eddie bauer one is not adjustable either.

I have a down Patagonia jacket that I’ve been trying to kill for years because 1) I hate down anything, won’t buy it due to ethical issues and 2) it was a “birthday present” from my ex husband, purchased on the credit card that I paid off monthly. Birthday present… from me… haha

It is warm, and for being so lightweight swishy material, it has taken a lot of abuse. There are two holes on it that lose feathers. 3 more and it’s going in a trash can.

I’ve had this down Patagonia parka for years and the outer fabric is tough enough to withstand farm chores: https://www.patagonia.com/product/womens-downdrift-insulated-parka/20605.html
I really feel lucky to have it and to have gotten it on sale. Long enough to cover bum and much of thighs, which keeps me much warmer than my shorter jackets. (I’m in Vermont and it does get cold here!)

Haha…(Randy, Ralphie’s brother.):snowman_with_snow: I often feel like that when I’m all bundled up.

I have one of those. Got it on sale, probably because of the color (green and gold). I love it too, for all the reasons you mentioned. Mine doesn’t have elastic cuffs, though. It does have armpit zippers, which are useful because it’s so warm! Great for barn chores or hacking out on frigid weather. Too warm to ride in when in an indoor.

I’ve had good luck searching eBay, Poshmark etc when looking for something specific that’s not made anymore. Got what I was looking for, barely used, sometimes new, for a song.

Years ago my sister gave me a Swiss made, long “riding coach” winter coat. That thing is sooo warm! And way too nice looking for the barn. I use it to walk the dog when it’s really cold out, like single digits wind chill.

Am I reading correctly that the Ariat coat has a nylon liner, not anything fuzzy? I have horrible shoulders and need a slickish liner so I don’t reef on my shoulders trying to put it on. Thanks if you see this and let me know!

I usually hit the thrift stores for barn/dog/home stuff and while that has worked well (bog boots for $10! Colombia down vest for $5 with weird logo but horses don’t care) but I need a decent coat for when I’m not dressed like a hobo.

Yeah it’s not a fuzzy liner. Not exactly a silky slick liner but it slides on easy!

OK, this isn’t coat related but I’m going to mention it. I’ve discovered fleece lined turtlenecks this year. Wearing them I’ve been able to cut back on wearing so many layers. I get them from Amazon, I have different brands and like them all. They do run one size small. It’s so nice to be able to lose one layer and still be warm.

My husband swears by turtlenecks for hunting and outside work.

I can’t stand them, I feel like I’m being choked to death.

Thank you!

You know, it’s nothing fancy but I have LOVED my Columbia Omni Heat Jacket. I like that it is low profile (not bulky), it has fabric cuff inside the sleeve so you don’t get any snow or draft up your wrist, and when you zip it up all the way, there’s that little bit of “cuff”? at the top that will keep your hood up without having any ties. And it’s the slippery material so horse hair does NOT stick to it, when the horses go through shedding.

I have a long version that I wear to work, and then I have my “farm coat” that is the short version at home. I was extremely impressed with my coat 2 years ago, when I buried my pickup in a snow pile trying to get home from work in a 40 mph wind blizzard about -30 * F or worse wind chills. Now granted I was outside shoveling but I never got cold and my hood stayed up. (Remember, no strings.) I was wearing the long version that day but I may or may not have bought TWO more short versions after that…

My only complaint is it is kinda lacking on the pockets. The short version just has two, although they do have zippers so I like that. The long version also has a small inner pocket around the chest area which is perfect for a cell phone.

Long version obviously doesn’t work well for actual riding in the saddle.

This is the short version or at least very similar to what I have.

Now, for blizzard whether at home doing chores, sometimes I put on my thick big oversized Carhardt insulated coveralls with the fur hood … but haven’t needed it in 2 years thank goodness! It hangs in the closet for those emergencies blizzards. I’m not even sure they make them anymore but they are WARM!

Good old Carhartt.
They last forever, they are warm as all getout, they are a timeless look, and they have incredible shoulder/lady bump room so you never have that tightening over the shoulders and pulling sleeves when releasing over a jump or bending over to heave a hay bale!!! They are designed for men’s shoulders and I love it.
If its not waterproof enough, spray the duck with horse blanket waterproofing product. Perfection!
