Working For a Saddle Company

Ask what support and training will the company provide. Are they just going to give you a 1 hour tutorial on their catalog and shove you out the door, or provide you with detailed fitting training and contact lists to get you started.

Also ask why the prior rep left. Sometimes that’s really telling.

In addition to researching how this company operates (exclusive territories, etc.) I’d research what other saddles companies operate in the area. You could have a great product but be in a location where all the trainers require a different brand or where no one has ever heard of your product. The worst would be a territory where the prior rep left a bad taste (or worse) in everyone’s mouth.

Find out if you’re prohibited from other activities (can you sell Brand X saddles and Brand Y bridlework or are you prohibited from repping other products).

Lots of research before pulling the trigger!
