Awwww, buddy. Pooping is promising, at least stuff is moving? Hope the vet has some good ideas! Jingles!
Right. I think we have a situation developing. Now other adult cat (16 yr old ex feral with huge appetite) is not eating… WTF.
Got hold of my usual vet who said they would do an ultrasound too, but wouldn’t be able to do it for a week. So, back we go to the outrageously expensive emergency vet today for an ultrasound for French Fry. Appointment tomorrow for the other, newly sick cat (?) at my usual vet.
Gah.
I’m so sorry this is happening - I hope you find the cause and they’re on the road to recovery soon.
Well crap. That really sounds an awful lot like the GI bug that went through my house. Metronidazole was really effective. The pills are awesome, the liquid is TERRIBLE.
More that it’s not strong enough to make them eat if the not eating is due to an obstruction
Aha! Ok, well then I’ll ask about it again today.
Ok I’ll suggest that too. They are going to love me
Well, emergency vet never called me back with the radiology report, didn’t give discharge instructions, and when I called them twice to ask when I could speak to a doctor to discuss next steps… they were too busy, and said I could bring him in but there was a 2 hour wait and any new emergencies might go ahead of me… so I took him to the SPCA and he’s getting u/s, bloodwork and appetite stimulant now.
What a fantastically expensive and frustrating disaster. And still no answers.
Did you get any answers from the SPCA? Yes, the ER should have called you back. I can, however, tell you that 4th of July weekend is essentially the busiest weekend of the entire year for most ERs. It was a 2 hour wait last night to see me unless your pet was actively trying to die. The ER group I do relief for is fully staffed doctor wise for the first time in well over two years, but hurting for support staff. Almost every ER around is trying to hire both lay and doctor staff. So, we take care of patients as quickly as we can, but there is typically a wait this weekend everywhere. It will be up to 3 to 4 hours for UTI and ear infections today
So you paid for the ultrasound at the e clinic and they were unable to tell you anything about the results, so you had to go pay for it again at the SCPA? Wow
How’s French Fry doing today?
No I paid for radiographs at the emergency clinic, and they didn’t ever call me back to discuss the findings from the radiologist, nor did they call me back when I told them the other cat was getting sick too. I called a couple of times, and all they offered was that I could come in and wait for two hours to speak to the doctor.
This was yesterday, the day after Fourth of July, and the big SPCA vet clinic was almost empty in the city, whereas the emergency vet in a suburb were too busy to call me back. Maybe a staffing issue, I don’t know. The SPCA did call the emergency vet and got them to send over the records, and the radiologist report, finally.
The SPCA did the ultrasound, and also re-did the bloodwork which showed the ALT levels back to normal.
I gave both the cats trans dermal mirtazipine last night, and this morning they both ate a small breakfast. I think I have enough mirtazipine for both of them for a couple of days, which I am hoping is enough to get them feeling stronger.
I have an appointment at my regular vet for the other cat today, but since it seems like he has the same thing as french fry, I’m going to cancel that appointment as I am down about $3000 at this stage with no answers or next steps suggested, aside from hospitalizing french fry on a drip to monitor him. I’m hoping he gains strength by eating, as well as the other cat, and manages to shake this off. We shall see.

Ugh, I’m so sorry you’ve still not gotten a clear answer
Since famotidine is OTC, it may be worth hitting the drug store and adding that?
Hopefully everyone turns the corner soon!
Hey Xan! I’m thinking about you and your kitties. How is everyone doing?
Thanks for asking! So, French Fry is feeling a good bit better, I would say about 60% better. He is eating about 3/4 of what he usually eats, and is very enthusiastic about treats but we are trying to get liquids into him. He still on the anti-nausea and appetite stimulant drugs, which is why I say he’s not 100% yet
The older cat Niblet however is feeling pretty groggy today. He’s been sleeping a lot and I’ve been trying to hand feed him baby food but he’s not very interested. This one has not been to see a vet yet, but may need to go tomorrow if he doesn’t pick up. He threw up last night, and had diarrhea in the night before. So, if things go the way they did for French Fry he should start feeling better in a day or two, but he is 16 so needs extra support. I have been giving him the same medications that were prescribed for the other cat, which the vet was pretty OK.
The kittens are doing fantastically… I actually think one of them may have had a mild case of this last week when she was not very interested in being hand fed kitten food but they are hungry monsters now.
Fingers crossed, in a couple of days we should be out of the woods. Still, with no answers as to what it was…
Sounds a lot like what went through my cats a while back. Started with one not eating, nausea when presented with food, etc. Took him to the vet, other than being a little bit dehydrated, nothing they could find. A day or two later, the second one had it, and a day or two after that, the third. We did a lot of water and baby food in a syringe for a couple of days, then everyone came around and got back to normal over the course of a few days. Hopefully yours will come around too!
Looks like the old guy is eating pretty well now… French Fry though not super hungry today but I think he’s going ot make it. What an ordeal!
Yay! Glad to hear things are looking up
I also tried a new food/treat called Friskies Lil’ Soups. They were listed as bring v tempting to sick cats and the old guy likes them. Most ridiculous product though - 1.2oz tiny plastic cup of what looks like chowder with a few bits of shrimp in it.
