Would love to hear experiences with open yoke stall doors

Boy, I wonder what my old man would do in a set up like that. He’s a real prick when hay is out in the field, will spend all his time running the horses off the piles, even when there’s lots of them. He is such a jerk!

No matter the system used to keep horses together, it is important to have compatible horses in groups.
If a horse is not being sensible and a danger to others, or one is being picked on, change the group, not fair to have one stressed about keeping others in line, or that it will be picked on.
We had both and had to make changes when things didn’t improve.
Just as people, some get along well, some need new company, or no company.

@Xanthoria, there’s what looks like a wheel at the lower left hand corner of that contraption-- it reminds me a bit of a cow stanchion-- is the whole thing movable? Or parts of it, anyway?

yes - they have really wide doors that open into the aisle. Often mares and foals are herded into the barn into their stalls all together, and let out all together. You can see it in this video of a Friesian breeding farm quite well

Thanks for that video, @Xanthoria.

I have a version of these in my little barn. I love them. But it’s a private place and my guys are very well behaved.

I rented some space this winter that had Classic Equine stall fronts with the narrow yokes. They were removable inserts and the previous owner had taken them out and put them who knows where. They worked at this farm for a few reasons —

Horses also had dutch doors to see outside so other source of entertainment. The aisle was HUGE. Like park my dually in there with my kitties in it and tack trunks on the sides and room to spare when I was worried about a tornado. Definitely wide enough to not be tempting to harass passers by. And the blanket bar was well out of reach.

Even the cribbed never cribbed on it because the bottom part is too curved. Also far too small and high to be tempting to climb thru.

I would not have openings if you have a more narrow aisle, cross ties in the aisle, or a setup where halters, blankets, etc. would be in mouth reach.

I think the Maddens have similar in their retirement barn. There was a YouTube video about it, pretty neat.
