I know a lot of people who prefer geldings. They try to tell me its because they are usually more even-tempered. Well, that may be so. A mare’s temperment may change day to day depending on the hormone balance in her body, but I firmly believe that a mare will go longer, farther, faster, and better than a gelding in the long run. The key is the bond. Once you have a mare’s heart, you have everything and she won’t quit on you like a gelding may (at least IME).
Ever see Richard Farnsworth explain Melissa Gilbert’s character in the movie Sylvester by using the Jack/Jenni (donkey) analogy? Same thing.
FWIW, yes, I own a mare. She’s the best thing on 4 legs… even on 3 she’d try her heart out.
