Wound not healing, frustrated with vet, any layman suggestions?

I may switch to the honey after the steroid is gone. We are getting pretty close to empty.

Here is where we are today, a little over a week after starting the steroid.

Lookin’ good!

You have to use raw honey, not pasteurized honey. I get mine from my neighbor who sells it to a racing stable on a regular basis. It is supposed to work really well.

I see marked, marked improvement since you started using the steriod. That looks hugely better.[/QUOTE]

Yes, very pleased with how it is coming along!

Have you thought about finding a certified equine laser specialist to laser it. Cold laser is an amazing modality for healing any type of would. follow us on FB

Yup, I got mine from a health food store. It was like $30 for a teeny tub but it’s honey so it doesn’t go off.
In my experience, it does wonders closing wounds that will not close in a high-motion areas.

Looks like it’s healing great!

I’ve always had a lot of lucky with Scarlet Oil. Just put a thick layer of Vaseline around the wound to keep it from running and then spray the area.

I haven’t had any injuries with wire, but I have used it on proud flesh wounds on bony areas (horse stepped on himself from the medial side of the knee down to the pastern in the trailer skinning his entire leg basically), plus a couple others

Also had a very fat pony that rolled on a large hot rock (so we think) that burned his skin the size of a dinner plate. It ended up getting infected. Had pock marks with hard puss granules and was very oozy (I secretly loved it)…All I did was clean it up with a hot towel every morning and cover it in the scarlet oil. It cleared up in probably a week and then continued using it every other day for about two weeks and eventually all the hair grew back normal.

I wish you luck! Very scary when things like this happen! especially in areas that are hard to heal like legs!

We don’t have anybody in the area that can do that right now. One of the local vet offices was working on getting the massage therapist that works through them certified, but last time I checked they were still in the progress of doing so.

Leg from today: https://goo.gl/photos/D9mFJwb7e5m4L8gw6

It is filling in super fast. It is almost flush with the top layer of skin now.

Really looking good. Just keep looking out for proud flesh until it 100% closes over with proper grown-in skin and then you’ll know you’re good.

Dang it, and I totally forgot to text the vet today to see if I need to keep on with the steroid. I am starting to run low. BUT today I saw a few hairs starting to come in!

Well bad news blues. Sydney managed to rip the front of her leg open. The part that wasn’t even seriously injured. Not sure how. :frowning: Just when things were going super awesome too.

Well, crap. Is it in a spot where she could have used her teeth on it? Sometimes nerve endings around healing wounds cause pain/irritation lading to self-trauma.

Today: https://goo.gl/photos/c1XYkF5fcAbND5V4A

No idea how it got from what it was yesterday to the mess it is today. :frowning: Vet doesn’t think there is anything we can do other than back to antibiotic cream as well as putting her on oral antibiotics.

WTF?! I would be obsessively walking the pasture to see if I could figure out how that happened and remove whatever caused the injury!!!

She’s in a pipe corral, I looked around but couldn’t find anything. She didn’t have blood anywhere but on her leg. She is inside for the rest of the weekend so she doesn’t make it worse running around while fireworks are going off. :frowning:

My horse pulled a stunt last year around November. He kicked through a cattle fence and almost gloved his back leg. Ended up with a 3in wide by 12 in long scrape down to the muscle.
I didn’t know any vets in the area and I didn’t have any money since I just moved. I doctored it myself. I got Corona Ointment, no stick pads, vet wrap and swat. Every day I rinsed the old Corona off and put new on with the swat around the edges to keep the flys away. After a couple weeks it looks a little grimy so I rinsed it off and wrapped it for a day.
Took it off the next day and it looked great so i went back to the swat/corona ointment treatment.
I got a nice scar on my horse out of it but I am OK with the result. He is not a high dollar show horse so I don’t care.

That’s really distressing. Did she kick through the pipe corral?! There must be something sharp somewhere :frowning:

Run your bare hands all around on the pipes. I’ll bet you find a sharp spot. There does not have to be blood on the pipes as it takes a moment to start bleeding.

Just seems so odd that it’s in the same spot on the same leg. Ugh. So much suck right now.

That’s really upsetting, I hear you
