"Wow, they do that now?" -- Surprises after a long absence

I just ran across my full chaps which will never fit me again. Listed them for sale but no takers

I have to ask, what size do they fit?

I had a pair that I loved as a kid in those exact colors.

I still have my full chaps folded up on a shelf somewhere, but I have not touched them since the first day I rode in a pair of half chaps. Lol.

I’d say they fit a 26, maybe a 28 depending on how thick your thighs are. Alas I am a 30 and they no longer fit and will never fit again. I think I originally got them off COTH, what were your initials?

those are beautiful. had a pair very similar to them, many years ago. the problem with full chaps is that these days, the leather on the higher end saddles is so soft, the dang things rub the crap aout of the saddles, and wear them (the saddle) out pretty quickly

That is super, super, super annoying. Especially given the cost of those saddles.

There’s no way I’ll ever fit into my full chaps either. I don’t recommend trying to either lol. Made me want to cry :sob:

I remember meeting a girl from Maine who was showing hers off at a William Woods prospective student weekend.

So I JUST HAD TO HAVE A PAIR. Granted I could only find the Sperry version here in the Midwest circa 1985.

Ok back to the ugly green insulated Northerners for barn and farm work. Those duck boot things were COLD. I thought Maine was too. Obviously they were just worn in town in short jaunts! Or fishing in the summer!

They came back in fashion a few years ago.

Scrolling this thread to see if anyone else was going to comment on these. I LOVED mine!

Now if you had grown up riding one of the cushy barrel back horse you would have learned to grip with your thighs! Much good for my saddleseat riding. Much bad for my hunt seat days!

But that is when you cleaned the tack rooms and found a bunch of cool things you would ask your trainer about!

The newer ones you can get lined  My BeanBoots have GoreTex and are warm and cozy walking in the snow and slush with normal socks.

Not sure what everyone’s home decor is like— could also work in a tack room— but you could always get a suitable hook of some sort and display your chaps on the wall as both art and an homage to your earlier days on horseback.

I suppose that’s what I’ll do when eventually I don’t ride much more anymore. Rather than “hanging up my spurs” I’ll “hang up my chaps.”

Haha yes! I thought we were going to get murdered when we “organized the medicine cabinet” aka rearranged everything and threw away anything even slightly expired. Said trainer was not happy :joy::joy::joy:

At least you didn’t throw away one side rein…one really really nice side rein because you thought it was missing something…

OMG, yes, what size?
Fringe is on my list! I have two pairs but no fringe.

I have a pair of ll bean boots that are the duck boot bottoms/toe area, leather uppers that are fleece lined. Love those boots. https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/125877?page=womens-bean-boot-8in-front-zip-fleece-lined-womens&bc=506697&feat=506697-GN2&csp=a&pos=6

I’ve already done that. My chaps are hanging next to an Edgewood bridle.

I’m with you. I often see COTHers lamenting that everyone jumped 3’6"+ back in the day, and now it’s all baby jumps. Well, so what? Jump height is not the measure of successful horsemanship. Also, it’s less risk to horses and riders. And they are having fun, so let’s give that spiel a rest.

I mean it kind of is if you are competing over fences. There aren’t any 2’ divisions at the Olympics so if the purpose of competition is to advance the sport as a whole then yes, there needs to be advancement up the ranks.

Maybe….just maybe……for 99% of people, the purpose of showing is to……have fun

Surely civilization will not crumble if they’re having fun at 2’-2’6”
