I SO wish they had trakehners at BN here in the midwest! Frequently the first time we see it is at Training. It’s hard to prepare for when they want to make a statement with it totally forgetting we haven’t schooled anything like it until that level.
Agreed. The venue is incredibly competitor-friendly, and the jump in question has been there for years, typically rides very well. I would hazard a guess that every event horse in Ocala has schooled at least one level of those trakehners, it is an inviting and straightforward fence appropriate for each level. It starts as a hanging log with groundlines (BN), and gets taller/wider/deeper as the level increases, but even the prelim one is not frightening.
Is anyone tracking paralyzations or catastrophic brain injuries as a result of eventing falls? The recent severe injuries of Nicola Wilson and Jennifer Wiedrick (from a Training schooling fall) has me really shook. These ladies are in their recovery so it’s unknown the end result but I keep thinking about them and checking on what’s posted publicly about their progress.
Also Caroline March in the UK this year
At the FEI levels these are part of the severe/serious injury data collected. In the US, yes, we collect TBI and other types of injuries when they occur.
There is no way to collect training injuries.
The fall forms required to be filled out at FEI are quite detailed. Not sure how one might determine a rider is impaired (drugs or alcohol) but the form does capture a lot of information.
Waiting anxiously for the next update on Jenny. Her mom was a good friend of mine when we fox hunted in Florida and we’ve just reconnected.
Did I miss something here? Who suggested anyone was impaired by drugs or alcohol?
No one. I wasn’t clear perhaps. The FEI Fall forms request that information. My response was to Reed’s comment regarding collection of fall information.
God this is heartbreaking. Ms. Poppins.
And isn’t this two for Bramham??
Tanaka’s horse was put down too.
The official statement on Tanaka’s horse.
Not insignificant to me. People misspell my name far too often. He looks like a beautiful boy and reminds me of a bay hunter I loved when I was a teenager. I am sorry for your loss.
Why don’t y’all build some for lower levels, knowing that you will face them at Training?
Some areas have venues that have trakehners down to starter and some don’t. In Area VII at least 3 facilities had a great set up for schooling trakehners up and down the levels. In the western edge of Area III I know of 1 with bn through training that is within 4 hours.
Trakehners can be expensive to build as you need to make a ditch or use the natural part of the topography. Than you need the appropriate sized logs, wood and tools to make a permanent fence that can’t be moved. My boss and I have been talking about building a starter and BN trakehners when we finish the ditch and maybe build a baby bank complex.
All the talk about horses & riders not being ready & whether course designers need to “dumb it down”. Alby & Nicola kinda answer the question for me. It’s getting harder & harder to support this sport.
It sounds like he hurt himself when he ran out or was it before?
My supposition from reading the articles is that’s correct but let’s be clear. I didn’t watch this am on the feed.
