WWYD - hoof abscess won't heal

No, it’s not.[/QUOTE]

Very dilute - but yes, bleach is used in wound care: Dakins Solution.

She did say

Straight bleach
is used in hospitals, for humans, on wounds, actually.

"To be effective, bleach MUST be mixed with water. Straight undiluted bleach is actually less harmful to bacteria than bleach diluted in water. " http://www.staph-infection-resources.com/mrsa-infection-control.html

I have heard, from primary sources (aka health practioners) that straight bleach (which is already diluted to some extent. I believe they use a 5% bleach in hospital settings, so that is what I meant by that) is used on people with really nasty flesh eating diseases. Of course, they have to put you into a coma first to do such a thing.

Just because hospitals do stupid things doesn’t mean you should follow their lead. For darned sure if a hospital is using bleach as a disinfectant for human tissue there’s an accountant behind the decision, not an informed medical professional looking out for the patient’s best interest.

There are several modern non-necrotizing disinfecting solutions that contain a modified chlorine molecule such as chlorhexidine and, oxychlorosene that are used in hospitals as well. They may cost a little more than regular bleach, but they also work better.

My mare has had abscess for 3 1/2 months. Vet xrayed. Farrier dug a hole. I applied icthamol, the green epsom salts pack and put antibiotics in hole. Wrapped. Not all at same time. I am desperate. Farrier has no hope. Any suggestions? Mri? What about ultrasound? It has drained through bottom and bulbs but vet can’t find that there is a link from bulb to sole.

A friend of mine had a horse that was constantly having abscesses in the heels (for years). Finally, she got a new farrier who noted the horses had broken bars on his heels and shod him in such a way to allow the bars to heal. It’s only been a few months now, but the horse has been sound and abscess free. I had never heard of such an injury before, but if you google it…it’s out there. And my friend had used many farriers (and vets) on this horse and this was the first person who noticed it.

You would be better off starting a new, current thread and putting your question out there. Many folks will only read the first post and then not all the interior posts. Your question may not be seen. Good luck.

Agree with above, new thread for new advice. I opened this one wondering if it were my old thread from a couple of years ago…

Try a white lightning “soak” (it’s really more of a vapour, instructions come with the product). I can’t say that it turned my boy around overnight, but I do think it helped finally kick the lingering issues we had.

I second the white Lightening and vinegar soak. If there’s lingering abcesses this will help knock it out. Also if hoof form/balance is improper it will exascerbate the potential for abcesses. More is going on with a lingering abcess.
