Yay!

I will confess I wasn’t sure Justify could do it… had Vino Rosso in my back pocket as a “backup”

Justify and Mike got the race and ride needed for Justify to win. No one pushed the pace early and threats down the stretch were there but not really serious. I think if Gronkowski had gotten seriously close, you woulda seen Mike start scrubbing and getting serious on Justify. I think Justify had enough in the tank to hold off a serious threat.

Watching Mike’s face on the way back to the front stretch was, for me, emotional. To see how much this win meant to him…

When he said post win “this horse was sent from heaven” I started tearing up. How many of us feel that way about our own horses? This was just so wonderful to watch and seemed so easy for them both. Really happy for Mike!

Yes. Gallant Fox and his son Omaha. Only sire-son team (so far) to win the Triple Crown.

OMG!!! What a great picture! You can see all of his muscles and realize just how hard he was working. He’s just attacking it! That would make a great poster - in my room! lol

That was when he jumped the tracks left from the walkover, not from doing a lead change.

So happy for Mike Smith, and for the horse and his connections.
And the country really could use this happy boost. Nice to have so many come together on something like the Triple Crown.

As for the ride, Mike was based in NY years before he returned to California, so should know “Big Sandy” well enough to realize when to ask him to make his move. And he rides like no other. Especially at his age, I am so impressed with how flat he can lay to a horse’s back. I saw something different at the start of the race than mentioned above. He was as low as you can go, to give the horse as little wind resistance as possible when making the lead.

Although I love Mike Smith, and still will favor his Zenyatta rides as much, I wasn’t a big fan of Justify - not crazy about Baffert, and wasn’t convinced he’d do it yesterday. But things changed after NBCSports replayed the Derby and Preakness early yesterday, and I watched his pre-race attitude. There it was. I’m gonna win this thing. Life is wonderful, and I’m the best horse around.

And I had the day off, and able to watch all of the coverage, and the horse got to me. Again, before the race, the attitude. I also had spent a lot of time trying to handicap who else to look for, and was big on Mott’s horse. But in the post parade, there was no one who was in the same league.

I liked Pharoah enough, but for some reason, like this horse more. Maybe because 2015 was a tough year for me, and this one is better in different ways. And maybe because I think we can use some coming together. Isn’t it like a horse to do that?

I’m working away from home, and miss hanging out with others to watch. But am a fan now, for sure.

Oh, and Barbara Livingston’s photo of Justify’s “leap” is even better.

Yay, indeed!! :congratulatory:

I really had doubts he would win I’m so happy to be proved wrong!!! He is such an awesome horse and built.

Never realized Mike Smith was from New Mexico, I probably saw him ride at the track in Santa Fe and never knew it. I’m going to check our old winning photos to see who rode our own horse there, pretty sure it wasn’t Mike Smith but the it would be cool if it had been.

Yes! In all the stories about him and watching him interact with Justify, I’m reminded of the “horse crazy kid syndrome.” He seems to truly love the horses like a teenage girl (and I intend that as a high compliment).

I was wondering what he could have been jumping since there couldn’t be any shadows in the fog, but he did the first furlong on the right lead and the first turn on the left so I thought he was changing leads. But I’ve watched it again and you’re right, the lead change came 3 or 4 strides after. yourself

I’m so disappointed…I missed the Preakness! I forgot it was on; usually when I open my internet on race days there will be a story “race day” so I remember. But on Preakness day there wasn’t any race stories everything was “Royal Wedding News!!!” So I missed the race and now I missed seeing live all three races that gave us the 13th Triple Crown Winner.

I know how you feel. I missed the first Triple Crown of my life, Secretariat’s. On Derby Day I had an opportunity to go trail riding and took it (hadn’t been a Triple Crown winner in the 11 years I’d been watching; why “today”?). I don’t remember what I was doing two Saturdays later. Three Saturdays after that I was at an audio store with a friend having a tape deck installed in my car. We went into the store and saw a little portable TV set on a chair. It was showing the stretch run of a horse race. I suddenly thought, “Belmont!” and saw this lone horse running all by himself to the wire.

CVPeg, thanks for that pointer to Barbara Livingston’s photo of Justify. That was an amazing shot… would love to know where the camera was, what kind and the lens (other than most likely the same lens I see all the time for sports photogs that are long and wide enough that I could crawl down them  ).

Just caught a reply of the post-race press conference with BB and MS. I know BB isn’t always the most popular but he both trains well and consequently gets good horses. BB mentioned Abel Tasman and Hopportunity and said he thought bringing 4 might be pushing his luck  . BB also thanked his entire team both on the road and back at Santa Anita including the jocks who have exercised Justify in the morning. Seemed like he was still a bit emotional about the win…

Mike Smith was still cool as a cucumber  Said he had the easy job… BB has the team and then just puts up the old guy who only has to sit still  Sounded like MS was fairly confident that Justify would be able to win.

BB never stops mentioning that you can think you have the best but you never know what horse is gonna break out of the gate… the A game or the B game.

Also just caught a reply of the Met Mile… 25 more yards and I think Mind Your Biscuits would have beaten Bee Jersey.

My DVR is set to record ALL horse racing so I never miss anything even if I can’t see it live. It does mean I have to delete a bunch of racing each night as I can’t watch everything.

And YAY! for Justify. After giving all the logical reasons why we thought one of the others would win, as they were loading into the gate my friends and I each decided Justify was going to win and I’m thrilled to see another Triple Crown winner.

So … a name for Mind Your Biscuits’ first foal?

I wonder, if Justify hadn’t won, would Smith and Troutt have blamed the Lord??? Before anyone accuses me of snark…this question crosses my mind every time a sports figure credits God for a win. They always blame themselves for a loss, however. I just don’t see omnipotent beings being bothered to engineer the outcome of a sporting event.

I remember Secretariat winning the Triple Crown and then the long long time before it happened again! And now again! Very exciting. Glad I was able to see all those races!

^^ This. Thank you. In the grand scheme of things “Sh!t Happens”, and as a result we either win or lose. Yes, “deity” makes note of the lilies of the field, but I’m sure doesn’t make millions of dollars rain on one particular person, unless it’s a test of some sort.

God/Deity: “Here’s a few million dollars and world acclaim. What are you going to do with it? Remember, I’m still judging.”

Recipient: “oh, damn…”

Mara, your post reminds me of a story my dad, a baseball fan as well as horse lover, told me years ago about Yogi Berra. I just Googled Yogi Berra to refresh my memory, and found this version of the anecdote on a church’s website to which I have no connection. –

In one particular game Yogi watched as the batter approached the plate. The Yankee catcher had seen it all, and this guy was like so many: eager to get a hit, but needing all the help he could find.

The batter stood at the plate and made the sign of the cross, then pointed toward the skies, both symbols of prayer as he summoned the Almighty to his aid.

“Hey buddy,” said Yogi from behind his mask, “Why don’t we just let the Lord enjoy the game?”

I LOVE that shot!! My Fav as well.

Exhuberant change of lead? Or jumping some tracks left by a grounds vehicle in the muck? That wasn’t supposed to happen, he was a little distracted a couple of times in that race, probably cost him a couple of seconds time wise.
