young horse with fatigue... Interesting update!

His white count was 6500.

Those tick-borne things will not always show up in a CBC. I’d put him on doxy & test, it’s cheap & easy, and puffy hind-legs are very typical of Anaplasma.

Rhino will present this way. My vaccinated babies all got it this year, and we’re very lethargic, developed fevers. One developed swollen lymph nodes and swollen legs.

Today was day 2 with no swelling. He has no fever and looks back to normal. I rode him lightly today and he felt fine.

His usual lazy self. It would be nice to know what cause the swelling though.

Could he have been allergic to the numotozine poultice?

I am hoping the laziness is just him growing and working more then usual.

I put him on some more grain and electrolytes so we will see how it goes!

So after a very exuberant turn out yesterday, he has some puffiness back. I gave him a gram of bute, but I wonder if the kicking at lunch time is just not letting anything heal?

Also, just a thought, he doesn’t have shoes behind, because of the jumping and more work load, could he be getting sore behind causing the laziness?

His hind feet look fine, but could the concussion of more work and kicking be causing issues?

I’m going to be obnoxious and repeat myself: rickettsial organisms (aka tick borne disease). Symptoms can come and go. Don’t know if you can do an Idexx SNAP test like a dog or not but if blood was sent out you should see if they have at least a cheap antigen/antibody test. Or save $ and throw some doxycycline at him.

There’s a reason a bunch of us east coasters have mentioned it !

I don’t have any doxy, only smz’s.

I will have to call the vet and I am not sure she will just give me the doxy.

I will call her and mention about the ticks and see what she says.

It’s pretty easy to pull blood and send it to Cornell. That will give you some sense of the answer on lyme (or other diseases if you choose to test for them).

He was ok today, a little puffy but not bad.

Vet is coming back out to do a chem panel and she is also going to look at the tick diseases.

I hosed and wrapped his legs again just in case.

He is still eating fine.

Haven’t got the results back, but he has been back to normal the last 3 days.

One of the other horses at the barn that went to a show this week got symptoms like my horse. He was super lethargic and the next day had huge hind legs. The show vet says he has seen it in other horses for the last few weeks.

So it will be interesting to see if the bloodwork shows anything.

Vet at show wasn’t specific other then saying a virus was going around.

I am riding him every other day and he has been good!

So I am hoping the virus is gone and that was most of the laziness and that we can move on with our training!

I came home from the last show of the year where my baby was super and plenty energetic. He got a week off and when I got back on I had super-molasses-boy and it took me a week of riding to realize that it wasn’t just his normal dead-ish self…he wasn’t feeling well. Everything was normal (temp by the time I thought to take it, general attitude, appetite, drinking), but right about the time that I realized he was just “off” of his game a bit, he started coughing. I opted to let it run it’s course, but had to resort to SMZs when the cough went on for longer than I was okay with. Talked to a few friends afterwards and it turned out that many of my friends with young horses at that show ended up with the same bug (a cold more or less with lots of coughing).

Anyhow, long story short, it’s reminded me AGAIN that every time one of my horses starts acting lethargic under saddle (and I mean lethargic enough that I think about it while riding) there’s ALWAYS a reason for it. But because several of mine are kind of “dead heads” it takes me by surprise every time.

My guy is a couple of weeks out from his thing, but is still a bit more lethargic than normal. Glad to hear that your guy is back to normal and I hope my guy is back there soon too!
