I had the EXACT same thing happen in November to my horse. Same reaction with the swelling and blistering and mouth in the water bucket. Mine didnt go away for a few days sadly! I called Merial, and after some research I believe that enough people are pissed that Merial isnt doing anything, nor do they care that there is a class action lawsuit being formed. I am so mad that they know about all of these reactions and yet they dont care to take it off the market or change it!!
Check old COTH threads on ZG. When my horse had a huge reaction in his mouth to it, I called vet, he knew nothing about reactions. Put horse on trailer, took him to vet, he was treated by vet with dex, GG etc. Vet swore he had heard nothing about problems with ZG.
Somewhere on the COTH, I found an 800 number to Merial desk, filed a claim, sent in vet bills, had to sign a release and they reimbursed me for the bills. Don’t know if they are still doing the reimbursements and have no idea why they have not changed the formula for ZG!
Interesting about the class action. My husband won’t participate in them on a matter of principle. And I am grateful to Mariel for many other great drugs/products, but they totally pissed me off with their attitude toward ZG. I don’t want to make drugs more expensive, but I want some warning on the package about a possible side effect and I ALSO want some response other than “are you a vet? please have your vet call” when I am freaked out with a drooling horse.
best thing to do is spread the word, and hopefully sales will drop enough for them to care?
I read about ZG, and won’t use it on my horse. Quest worries me as well. I have not had any problems using Equimax.

I’m the OP.
She did say it is key to get the paste as far back onto the tongue as possible, and not in the cheek pouch.
I told her I was lucky to be able to get it in their mouths at all with my wrist issues and I’ve never had issues with other wormers. She said she completely understood.
Thanks everyone![/QUOTE]
Wait a sec…so if you put the paste as far back as possible…wouldn’t you still get the ulcers inside their mouths? You just wouldn’t see them?
Pippigirl,
The Merial tech said that the reaction is with cheek/gum tissue but apparently not the tongue which is why they say far back on the tongue.
Reading between the lines she’s nicely telling me I paste worm incorrectly.
In may case (bad wrists/elbows), I’m lucky I can get it anywhere near the mouth and don’t end up wearing all so having to be so specific with placement is a non-starter with me even if the product wasn’t causing issues.
Never had a problem with any other wormer before so I don’t mind putting ZG in the “never again” category.
Why would anyone believe anything that Merial says at this point? That product has been harming horses for years, who knows what the unseen effects are. Merial does not care because the legal damages for a hurt horse are not punitive, and our regulatory system is failed.
I called Merial and told them about my horse’s mouth ulcer, then stomach ulcers showing up later. I told them I had heard that they would reimburse a horse owner for expenses related to ZG. I can’t remember exactly now what they said - but basically they told me they’d never heard of such thing, they have never reimbursed anyone for anything related to ZG, and they couldn’t help me, so goodbye. It really really pissed me off.
because people continue to purchase.

Its not an 800 number, if you dialed Merial and used an 800 number you would get a sex line.:winkgrin::winkgrin:
Same thing happened to 17 of the 50 plus horses at the barn where my horse is boarded. First time it has ever happened.
FYI - My horse had a minor reaction to Quest Plus - an ulcer on the lip where I got some of the paste. So that one is not 100% fool proof either. I try to get it as far back in the mouth as I can now and keep an eye on him the next few days.
