10 day old orphaned foal: nurse mare found

I’m cross-posting. I desperately need the collective COTH hive mind to give me options to have this little colt survive and thrive. Breeder and Vet are looking for a nurse mare. The farm is located in Alder Flats, Alberta. There is another mare who is about to foal, so maybe she would be willing to adopt him and milk replacement pellets could be used to supplement his diet. Ideas?

Maybe she will, maybe she won’t, hard to say. You can rig up a foal feeder made from an igloo drink cooler in the meantime. You can also start some milk based creep feed free choice. The most important thing is to make sure he isn’t alone. He needs someone even if it’s a goat or a mini in with him at all times.

Do everything in your power to find a nurse mare…my couple of experiences at a racing barn where they just used a companion (goat) translated into epic bad behaviours from the foal…they need a mare to keep them in line and teach them to behave like a horse…

Breeder has found a nurse mare. Hopefully, all will go well with the bonding.

The mare and foal have bonded. Angel claimed him as her own immediately. She certainly is an Angel. Lots of tears of joy flowed this morning.
