If you have one, do you use a liner to keep it clean? If not, how, and how often do you wash it?
I don’t - I don’t really see the point of using a liner if you want wool against your horse. I hose all of mine regularly. I blast them with a spray nozzle and let them air-dry. Hope that helps
Shop vac &/or hose off as needed, but I know some people soak wool pads in a Rubbermaid box of warm water & woolite and rinse, rinse, rinse if they’re really gross. Haven’t tried that method myself though because of all the “instructions” not to drive salt from the horse’s sweat deeper into the wool by saturating it
I actually have a diamond wool liner that I use. Mine has a cutback, even though my pad is a contoured spine, because finding a contoured liner to match the contour of my pad was tough.
I don’t. I use 5 Star pads and I love how soft they are. I want that softness and good-quality material against my horse as well.
I wash mine twice a year usually. I wait to wash them the first time in the spring until AFTER the shedding is done. And then sometime later in the year I’ll wash it again.
I probably will get my own pressure washer this year, but I usually just take them to the car wash and hang them on the mat holders to wash them. I even just use the soap that comes in the car wash. Red’s 5 Star pad is 4 years old this year and it still looks good as new. Hasn’t hurt it a bit.

Thanks, Y’all have convinced me to ditch the liner (cotton).
I’ve used a shedding blade on mine if/when they get too hairy from shedding season.
