137th Preakness Stakes

May as well start a new thread …

http://www.preakness.com/

Regarding some initial shuffling on who will & won’t be seen in the 2nd leg:

Dullahan, who finished third, was not expected to run in the second-leg of the Triple Crown but trainer Dale Romans is reconsidering.

Romans said he will see how the horse trains over the next week or so before making a decision.

Grade 2 Jerome Stakes winner The Lumber Guy, who was thought to be among the fresh-legs entries, will not be coming. Instead he’ll stay at Belmont for the Grade 2 $200,000 Peter Pan Stakes this Saturday.

Mark Valeski, who was held out of the Kentucky Derby by his connections, heads the prospective field of runners for the Peter Pan.

Hopefully Kevin Plank with the restored former Vanderbilt owned stable - Sagamore Farm - will have Tiger Walk ready to charge in the Preakness. In the last month Alfred G. Vanderbilt III visited the former family owned stable (1933 to 1986) for the first time in decades:

Vanderbilt, 62, returned to the farm Friday for the first time since he was a teenager. A New York-based public relations executive, writer and musician, he was in Baltimore for the memorial of a former Sagamore worker. He had not even seen photos of the farm, which fell into disrepair after his father sold it, and had spoken to Plank only via telephone. He took a tour of the grounds Friday morning, finding all new fences but several of the same old buildings. The track is now synthetic; recycled Under Armour cloth is part of the mix.

“It’s a special place,” Vanderbilt would say later.

Said Plank: “You have a classic American family that shares history with this barn. It’d be interesting to get his perspective on what this crazy guy is doing with this place. It was really warm to hear his impressions of the farm and the way we’re bringing it back.”

He dreams of a day when Maryland sports fans keep tabs on Sagamore’s 2-year-olds as they search for Triple Crown contenders.

“I’d love to be mentioned some day in the same breath as the Ravens and Orioles,” he said. “Who said we need a hockey team or a basketball team? Hell with that. We’ve got a great horse racing team here.”

Walking around humming “It’s the most wonderful time of the year…”

It almost sounds like the Trinniberg camp want’s to be Bob Baffert’s BFF

Parbhoo believes if it were not for Trinniberg, Bodemeister would have won the Derby and most likely, he believes the Triple Crown.

“I went into the race not to hurt anybody like that,” Parbhoo said. “I didn’t think we’d go that fast; I thought 47 [seconds] for the half and maybe 1:11 or 1:12” for six furlongs.

“If Bodemeister is going to the Preakness, I’m not going to go,” Parbhoo said by phone Tuesday from Florida. If he’s not going, I’ll go to the Preakness.”

I’m sorry, but his reasoning is just wacked:eek:
If Trinniberg hadn’t been in the Derby, whose to say Bodemeister wouldn’t of ran the same way? His jockey even said he(Bode) was full of it…

Looks like the Derby winner is a frequent tweeter

And often it’s with his fellow stablemate, pony horse, and multi-millionaire - Lava Man. From Lava in regards to this particular picture:

@stpublishing Great photo of me I have always had the eye of the tiger. Use it now that’s how I keep the youngsters in line.

Not exactly breaking news but it appears the 1-2-3 of the Derby will be the same with the Morning Line odds for the Preakness at this point.

If he does run, as many hope, Bodemeister will be the morning-line favorite over I’ll Have Another, according to Pimlico’s linemaker, Frank Carulli.

“If Bodemeister runs, I’m 100-percent sure he’ll be the favorite,” said Carulli. “I can’t see any scenario where that wouldn’t happen.”

Carulli added that I’ll Have Another will be second choice on his Preakness line, and Dullahan, third in the Derby, the third choice.

The connections of Dullahan also are waiting a while to commit to the race. “We’re probably going to wait until Saturday or Sunday,” said Dale Romans, trainer of Dullahan.

Also there is the Female Jockey Challenge - with Forest Boyce, Vicky Baze, Emma-Jayne Wilson, Rosie Napravnik, Tammi Piermarini, and Abby Fuller.

I think most people who have followed Doug are aware of past milkshake issues. His 3rd such charge from 2010 looks to be coming up soon for a hearing:

… another TCO2 violation pending in California when blood from the horse Argenta contained 39.4 millimoles per liter of TCO2 before finishing eighth in the sixth race at Del Mar on Aug. 25, 2010

Obviously if there is an impact with a suspension it would be after the Triple Crown series is completed.

I love that Lava Man tweets. Glad he is staying to supervise the Preakness preparations. Do the Derby winner and Lava Man have Facebook accounts too?

In case anyone is thinking fresh-legs and/or a new sprinter bullet is going to snag the Preakness there is little support for it in recent years. DRF: New shooters in the Preakness

There were a total of 168 starters in the last 15 Preaknesses. Of those, 91, or 54%, were new shooters who did not start in the Kentucky Derby.

Without question, many of those newcomers to the Triple Crown were no hopers. But there were many overmatched Preakness starters who also started in the Derby, too. The point is, while new shooters accounted for more than half of the last 15 Preakness fields, as a group, they had a success rate of 3%.

How about the extremes - in recent years - with the highest new runners and lowest?

A couple of other surprising points: The recent Preakness with the highest percentage of newcomers was in 2008, when 10 of the 12 starters, or 83%, were new shooters. The recent Preakness with the lowest percentage of newcomers was in 1999, when only three of the 13 starters, or 23%, were new shooters.

I don’t know… I’d say there is some value to horses that specifically aim for the Preakness. I mean… even 2nd is $200k. Not a bad payday considering the local stakes levels.

I mean hell… I enjoyed it.

With the prior mention of Al Vanderbilt III going to Sagamore Farm and meeting Kevin Plank: photo here of them and Alfred’s visit

Just in the last hour: A tweet push to get Rosie to ride for Sagamore Farm in the Preakness

If you think @SagamoreRacing shud get @Rosie_Napravnik to ride Tiger Walk in Preakness plz retweet!

What better pairing - a proud Maryland-bred jockey riding for a proud old Maryland racing outfit reborn. Per the farm he’ll get his last work this Sunday 5/13.

By the way, do you want to go for a ride with Tiger Walk? try this EquiSight exercise with him at Sagamore on the synthetic track they have.

Yup

Dullehan is a no-go for Preakness … will opt for Belmont instead.

In the NYRA release, [Jerry Crawford, head of Donegal Racing partnership] said the decision to skip the Preakness was based on the belief that Dullahan is a major candidate for 3-year-old of the year, and that a third race in a five-week span was not in the colt’s best long-term interest.

No tweets from Rosie on maybe getting the Sagamore mount. She did however tweet about the pony racing at Pimlico:

Did anybody see the Chasin’ for Children Pony races at Pimlico? How cool! That is just how I got my start in racing

Kent Desormeaux to ride Tiger Walk…

Gemologist - injured, no Preakness or Belmont

On Monday, however, Walden noted that Gemologist was “dead lame” in his left front. Walden said that tests showed that there was one spot just off the frog “right in the sole that was very tender,” he said.

Walden said that two sets of X-rays “from the knee down” were negative on Gemologist.

Walden was hopeful that Gemologist could be ready for a summer campaign that would include the Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park on July 29 with possible a prep in the Dwyer at Belmont on June 30.

Trinniberg will not start in the Preakness and Hansen might now skip; Jon Court loses Optimizer mount

Owner Shivananda Parbhoo said Trinniberg, who prompted Bodemeister through sharp early fractions in the Derby before fading to 17th, said he would not run his horse back in the Preakness under any circumstances. Earlier in the week, Parbhoo said he would run Trinniberg in the Preakness if Bodemeister didn’t run back.

Friday, Parbhoo said the Preakness is “too close back” and that he would point Trinniberg to the Woody Stephens, a seven-furlong race on the Belmont Stakes undercard.

Mike Maker, the trainer of Hansen – last year’s 2-year-old champion who finished ninth in the Derby – said he is leaning against running back in the Preakness, though no firm decision has been made.

Trainer D. Wayne Lukas confirmed that Corey Nakatani would replace Jon Court aboard Optimizer in the Preakness.

While still anything but firm the additional new shooters appear to be:

Hierro, Tiger Walk, Teeth of the Dog, Pretension, Brimstone Island, Cozzetti, Zetterholm, and Guyana Star Dweej.

Purchased for the bargain price of $5,500 as a yearling in 2010, Guyana Star Dweej is a chestnut son of Eddington. Career record: 9-1-5-0; graded earnings $0.

Guyana Star was the name of a horse who won 52 races for trainer Doodnauth Shivmangal in his native Guyana.

Watched the workouts at Pimlico this morning. I’ll Have Another galloped easily and went back to the stakes barn.

Lava Man returned to ceremoniously lead the hundreds of runners who entered the course and circled the track once to complete a 5K race for Susan Komen. A rich man’s Rosie Ruez, Lava Man trotted ahead of the pack and crossed the wire first, got to hear himself given his due by the track announcer and then posed for the gallery. A striking poster boy for having the time of your life in a second career.

What wimps!

I’ve been reading some older and old books that talk about horse racing. In the sixties, two weeks was the regular schedule for many of the top horses. As I mentioned in another post, the Preakness used to be three weeks after the Derby. Native Dancer ran the Derby, two weeks later won the Withers, and a week after that came back to win the Preakness.

In the 1800’s horses would run multiple race a DAY. Can’t remember the name, but one of the very greats ran 3 big races in 2 days as a three year old and won all three, including the St. Leger.
