Just got off of the phone with a vet friend who says just to keep an eye on him, but little mischievous boy got ahold of a chicken wing bone while I wasn’t looking, saw me coming, and swallowed it whole (he has no teeth). He is a rescue and usually has a decent “Leave it!” But I guess this was too good to relinquish.
It was about 3" long and I have no idea how he is going to pass this bone. I’m freaking out. Anyone have any good stories for me??!
I am not even remotely close to being a vet but I’ve heard that whole bones can actually be a little better than chewed bones because a sharp piece is less likely to puncture anything if the bone is whole.
Did the vet encourage you to feed bread or is that an old wives tail?
If the vet says wait and see, I’d wait and see while looking out for any abnormal digestive symptoms - vomiting, diarrhea, etc.
Yes, I’d feed him some bread, but if it was a cooked bone then him not chewing it as a blessing. If it was little chicken wing/drumstick then I’d think it would pass through. If he starts vomiting or goes off food then get him to the vet ASAP!
I bet your little dog will be fine but it is nerve wracking.
We came home one night long ago and the heeler, the Catahoula and our friend’s Lab had eaten a jar of peanut butter. Not just the peanut butter - but the glass jar itself. There was nothing left but the tin lid.
Called the vet in the middle of the night. Glass is clear, doesn’t show up on X-rays. She said to feed them as much cheap Wonderbread-type bread as they would hold and see how things went. Which we did. They showed no ill effects…each of those critters lived to be 13+ years old.
So, try not to worry too much. Keep an eye on your chicken thief, feed some bread if you have it and it makes you feel better and we’ll cross our fingers.
Thanks guys. He is eating just fine this morning, so fingers crossed that he poops out a whole bone today.
She recommended lots of rice and extra food to kind of “cushion things.”
Rocky mouse, what were they thinking?!? A JAR?!? That’s a new one.
I had a chihuahua swallow a whole rib bone from something…it wasn’t a bird bone but I don’t recall what type of meat. Anyhow, we were trying to get it out of his mouth (he had hold of it, and my husband had his hand around his neck, and was trying to take it out of his mouth and he just gulped! and swallowed the whole thing.) Anyhow, he never had any ill effects from it at all! I was worried and called the vet, but he said it would be o.k., and it was!
Was the chicken wing bone cooked, or raw? If it was raw, he should have no trouble with it.
Any updates?
The chicken bone was cooked- part of a buffalo wing:(
But, he is still eating and pooping normally, so I’m hoping we dodged a bullet! fingers crossed!
