19.5" Saddle Options

I’m casually starting to look for an English saddle for hubby. He’s been riding in a western saddle for years , but is now consistently taking lessons and posting in a western saddle is tough!

He needs at least a 19" and likely a 19.5". I’m thinking an A/P or CC with longer flaps and decent blocks.

His horse is a stocky Paint who is a relatively easy fit. He’s a medium wide with decent withers and a fairly straight back.

Any recommendations for brands or models? I’m keeping an eye out for a used Smith Worthington or Stubben at the right price. What else should I consider?

There was a 19 or 20 inch at Maryland saddlery a month or so back. I would bet they still have it.

Rick’s has a used 19" Jeffries Fly Over Event listed. They have a pretty forward flap standard.

Crosby Paragon came in 19" and were pretty generously “cut”. Stubbens also come in 19 inchers.

I have a 19 inch Albion Selecta, medium wide, and all three interchangeable knee rolls. Great, comfortable saddle. Too bad I am into Fjords now and it fits nothing in my barn!

I second the Smith Worthington rec. A lot of men hunt. I know I’ve seen those in at least a 19’ at the Tack Exchange.

A lot of men hunt over here, and just more male riders in general. I’ve seen some County saddles with “large dimensions” and forward flaps that fit a flatter back.

I also saw an older, but allegedly still comfortable Passier Military saddle that was a good fit for a tall man.

A 19" saddle is pretty big and may well extend beyond the last rib . If your husband has long femurs, you might consider a smaller saddle with a flat seat and a forward cut flap.

Smith Worthington, Stubben, Albion are my favorites if you need a bigger than normal seat. I have also seen a few County and HdR saddles in 19" seats.

Quick update that I pulled the trigger on a 19.5" Smith Worthington Solaris on eBay. Fingers crossed it fits!
