1Tuff and Other 1-Piece Stall Mats?

I’m moving to a new barn and will need to do some minor renovations/outfitting to make it suitable for my horses and needs. One task is putting mats down over the level 12x12 limestone base stalls. I really like the concept of a 1 piece stall mat and came across 1Tuff on Google, but am concerned as I can’t find many reviews and as the mat is only 1/4” thick. The price is definitely right, though, at around $600/stall. I’m wondering if anyone has experience with this brand? Or if anyone can offer alternative recommendations?

I have one ComfortStall mattress I will be moving with me, but need to outfit the other three stalls. I’m also considering quotes on mattresses, or just going with traditional 4x6 3/4” rubber mats, but I hate that the pee inevitably ALWAYS seeps through the seems, creating a smelly and eventually unlevel mess.

I have eliminated the idea of Stall Skins or Stall Savers as I want what I put in to be impermeable.

A 1/4" mat isn’t going to give much cushion. We’d go with the traditional 3/4" mats and make them interlocking. Not much urine is going to go through them.

I’ve seen 12x12 (.17mm thick, .66 inches thick) stall mats available from Schneiders and Cashmans. They are pricey, over 1k each.

I have seen someone use construction adhesive to join 4 mats. It worked really well. No seepage. However, the mats were laid over wall to wall pavers. Not sure if it would work as well over stone dust.

Interesting idea. One I have not tried yet.

I have tried several things to seal the one seam where my mare always pees, I have yet to get anything to work to keep the seam (which looks nice and tight) closed enough to keep the pee out of it.
(Yes, there is lots of bedding, pee goes thru the bedding and before it soaks into the bedding it finds its way down between the mats.)

use dry pellets where they pee, mix well with the bedding

Our stalls are matted using 4by6 heavy mats over concrete pavers, no issues with pee getting under the mats as we use a bed of dry pellets where they have chosen as their pee area.

(I use a grain shovel to remove the wet bedding from the mats)

I use dry pellets where they pee.

A whole layer of them under the shavings. (And clearly mixed in with the shavings.)

Feel lucky that you have never had this problem.

oohhh. same here. A whole bag where they pee plus more mixed in with their heavily bedded shavings. I have two mares that I swear hold it till they get inside. They flood their stalls when they go, pellets and shavings can’t soak it up fast enough. It’s insane. The other night there was a family emergency, and I didn’t get them into their stalls until several hours after their usual turn in time. I figured well, at least they must have peed outside by now. Nope. Cue flooding immediately upon entering stall. You never heard such groaning in relief from those two. I was groaning too but for a different reason.

I am interested in getting the one-piece mats too. Please let us know if you get them.

I was thinking about getting ones cut larger than the stall, putting the single mat over their existing mats and run the extra up the wall a bit, kind of like they do for the stable comfort stall mattresses, the top mat is affixed to the walls with a plastic strip and the top of strip is sealed to the wall. That way there is not a seam where the mat meets the wall - which seems to be where the mares prefer to pee.

I don’t think one quarter inch mats would hold up very well. Especially if a horse paws or wears shoes. Maybe if you bed in foot deep sawdust so the hooves do not contact the mats. I had friends many years ago that had 14x14 size stalls and were able to buy 3/4 inch mats in two pieces. They were extremely heavy and did not move but were hard to get in the stalls due to the size and weight. Not sure you could find them again. I have interlocking mats. They do not shift and fit so tightly I doubt any urine is getting under the mats. I also have one stall with thinner mats ( maybe half inch) that do not interlock. They move all over the place and lots of stuff gets between the mats. Would never buy them again.
