2 + 1 trailer modification to 4 horse

Hello, I have a two plus one trailer (the kind with the two straight load stalls and then a box stall in front). there is a large aluminum door that separates the two stalls from the box stall and the box stall is quite spacious. I’m trying to see if anyone has ideas or has successfully modified the front box stall into two-three slant stalls or two straight load stalls. thank you

Looks at 2+2 configurations. Wouldn’t be hard to pay someone to make and install that front divider. Wouldn’t be cheap, but cheaper than a whole new trailer.

definitely cheaper, A slant divider is only $800!!

Factor in someone welding it on for you, though, and make sure that the function of the trailer doesn’t get impeded by the installation. Carefully study the pictures of the 2+2s and do it!

This in spades. Check that any insurance you have won’t be voided by modifications to the trailer not made by the manufacturer.

And also check to make sure (g) you won’t exceed the trailer’s carrying capacity/GVWR with the extra horse and accompanying gear, as well as the weight of the modifications.

For example, my 2+1 has a 12,000 gvwr. The trailer itself weighs 6500 from manufacturer, but my upgrades put it at about 7000 empty. So this leaves me 5000 to work with; plenty of capacity as a 2+1. Figuring 1250 per butterball, er, horse, that leaves me over 1000 lbs for gear, hay, etc.

But add a fourth at 1250, and perhaps 100 for the divider, and I’m over GVWR before I even hang a hay bag.

I’m not sure what size horses you have but your +1 may not be big enough to make in to extra stalls. Standard +1s aren’t big enough for my horses; I entertained doing exactly as you are asking, but the +1 is almost always shorter in length than the standard straight load stalls and therefor would not accommodate a horse (or two) standing longitudinally.

I’ve been looking at 2+1s and they are not necessarily easy to find, so you may want to contemplate selling for a good price and just buying what you want if your project isn’t going to work.
