2 owners of pits about to be put to sleep-steal the dogs out of the pound

This went all the way to the courts, and the dogs were deemed doomed. At the exact time the verdict came down owner went to the pound and ‘walked the dogs’ then came back and said they had escaped. Oops…too bad.
These 2 dogs attacked twice-eacaping their not so tight yard , the second time they tore a small dog apart and mauled the owner trying to save it.

Evidence supporting a breed ban. Frankly, I find it difficult to blame people–they love their dogs. Maybe they should have gotten a different breed of dog to love in the first place and prevented all this suffering. Time for government to step in.

I completely agree with every word of this post. And I don’t understand why anyone would bother defending pit bulls. There are so many hundreds of other breeds that DON’T kill people or other living beings when they shouldn’t, and there is no benefit to society that pit bulls need to exist; just get rid of them and all of the other fighting breeds. There is just no need for them.

I didn’t get in on the other post, but rather than banning them I think their breeding should be regulated - licensed breeders only. Heavy fines on rule breakers.

If bred properly, the Am Staff is a fine dog. But the backyard breeders and deliberate bad breeders need to be stopped. They are ruining the chances for this (these) breed(s) to survive - since there are a number of ‘pit types’ that get lumped together.

As written, the thread title may be the ultimate solution to poorly raised dogs.

Please define “backyard breeder” and “deliberate bad breeder”.

So if pit bulls are banned, no breeding takes place, pit bulls disappear from wherever they’re banned from then where does the re-introducing breeding stock originate?

I find it very easy to blame them. I also blame the dog owners who don’t report attacks by someone else’s pitbull because ‘they might lose their dog.’ Grow a pair, people.

One night I was at my vet when a woman brought in her dog that had been recently attacked. I & someone else asked if she reported it “Oh no, they might lose their dog” WTF, they should. Do you want this to happen to someone else?

Also people like my father, who watched the neighbor’s pits chase a small dog up it’s owner’s arm, then declined to tell animal control b/c the people might lose their dogs. It wasn’t the first time the dogs, owned by 2 over 60s who had no chance of ever pulling them off, did something like that. Eventually they did have to put in a 10’ fence & the dogs have to be muzzled if outside the fence.

Bullspit. If someone loves their killer dog so darn much, they should ensure that it is NEVER in a position to harm another animal or person. If they don’t do that, too bad, so sad, the dog dies. PERIOD.

I hate to say that government is the answer, but it might be. It’s also time for those who claim to love animals to step up, do the right thing, identify dangerous behavior to the proper authorities and stop making excuses for the people who are responsible the death or injury of their innocent pets.

Good point. Perhaps AKC registered dogs who are actively showing, or who have already secured titles, should be exempt from any ban.

What is so disturbing is…these dogs supposedly are now somewhere in New Jersey. Another time bomb waiting to explode.

This chick is just great. This is what she said before the euth order came down:

“I own these dogs, they’re my dogs, the responsibility is going to be me,” Jones told CBS 13 Wednesday. Jones says one of the dogs isn’t good with other dogs.

Jones says she’s willing to face the consequences.

“I’m just devastated, I’m sorry that this happened,” Jones says, “And I feel for her and I’m sorry for her dog and I just wish that this never happened.”

I wonder what her definition of ‘responsible’ is.

Lady - if you need 2 fences to contain your dogs, your dog shouldn’t be breathing.

These animals should be hunted down in New Jersey, and put down. I hope the woman who was injured, and owned the dog that was killed sues these people for every penny.

I think a lot of it is Black Beauty syndrome, extended to dogs. People want to look tough, and have vicious, aggressive dogs, because then they can say “I have them, and they’re love bugs”. Bad owners of these animals don’t care what happens to other people and animals, when the dogs escape and wound or kill.

Nope, the owners are the ones who failed to adequately contain them. If you want to own a dog with a high prey drive, appropriate containment is on you. My friend loves huskies and cats. She will not have both at the same time.

I wasn’t aware pit bulls are a recognized breed. Or is pit bull another term for Staffordshire Terrier? Or are pit bulls a cross bed with Staffy blood?

I think we all know what I mean. People who breed to sell puppies for cash, without selection for acceptable breed traits; people who breed dogs deliberately for aggressive temperaments - either for fighting or “protection” and then sell them to idiots who have no idea how to train them.

American Staffordshires should not be aggressive. They shouldn’t be very big, either. There are a lot of people who breed them properly, register them, title them, do health checks on the before breeding, etc. They don’t tend to be the dogs that attack people on the streets.

Here we go, there’s no such thing as a pit bull. :sigh:

There isn’t on the AKC side. UKC does recognize American Pit Bull Terrier as a breed.

This is horrible. I can fully see the sentiment wanting to steal your dogs back, but the owners have proven already to be irresponsible, and they and the dogs need to face the consequences.

A friend owns a wonderful pit. He’s on the bed with us now as she’s staying with us a while. She makes a point of him ALWAYS wearing a muzzle whenever he’s out on a walk in the park where he’s likely to encounter others. He’s never given any indication of doing something untoward, but friend is hyper responsible and knows about breed bias, and refuses to take a chance on an animal she loves dearly.

All pit owners should behave responsibly all the time. Theres too much at stake.

Another attack by loose pit bulls. Woman dead, man injured. I posted the link in the other thread.
