2 yr old Dutch how much will he grow?

Went to USDF Dressage show yesterday and those grown up horses made my 2 look small. Today he is 15.3 - not huge at all. Dad is 15.3h and mom is 16.1 but hasn’t put anything small on the ground in her life - she has an appendix son 17.2 from a 15h stallion.

This is my first Dutch - anyone care to share insight on growth patterns? How big are your 2s? is mine small?

15.3 at 2 is quite normal for a warmblood. My guess is you can expect at least a couple of more inches by maturity, but a lot depends on bloodlines. I have a 7 yr old mare who grew 2-3 inches this year! At 2, she was about 15/ 15.1 and now she’s about 17hh.

Thanks so much for your response. Wow - grew 2 inches at 7? Eeekk! I’ve never raised a WB so have no idea of what to expect or if he is normal for his age or small. His head is pretty long, so hopefully he’ll grow into it.

I guess his dad doesn’t have any offspring under 16.1 and for sure his mom’s kids are good size. I didn’t breed for a giant but i was hoping for something in the 16h range.

It sounds like you’ll get 16hh, maybe more. What are the bloodlines? Maybe people here with horses of similar breeding can share their experiences.

Mine (not Dutch, but I don’t think it really matters) was 16h at 2 and finished at a hair under 17h. He even grew a smidge at 7.

At 2, he is by far not done

you will probably get another 2 to 4 inches. WBs mature late most of the time. He is not small. My 3 YOs that will mature at around 16.2 are currently about 16H

My Anglo Trakehner was 15.3h at 2 and is now 16.3h at 8.

My Dutch filly was about 15.3h at 2 years old; she is now about 16.2 (front) and 16.3 (hind) at 3 yrs old.

Am hoping front catches up with back and that she stops - SOON!
