2009 KY Derby 135th edition; final post-position/odds p28

Here are the final workouts of many of those running in the Santa Anita Derby. Larry Zapeye is awesome!

The Pamp looks a lot better in this workout than he did in his last workout. I have a hunch that he may have displaced in his last workout. Looks ready to go now though…

I can’t really say anything bad about any of those horses. They all looked great to me in their final works. Hopefully, the SA track will be fast and speed favoring;)

Anyone going to the Wood On Saturday? I’ll be there with no reserve seats, wandering loose. Look for me in the Man O’ War room for the simulcast from Kee, OP and SA.

Ok, so I’ve been thinking about the races this weekend…and this is what I am thinking…(not that anyone cares and I wouldn’t blame them, but I’ll say it anyway:lol:)

KY Derby thoughts at this point.

Quality Road…#1…period. Conformation, size, speed, way-of-going, size, strength, rideability, breeding, stamina…this horse is the total package. Someone is going to have to step up to beat him. Of course, a bad trip could beat him as well.

Dunkirk…#2. He may be #1 by the end of this year. Too bad he probably won’t get into the Derby. But, it may also be a blessing in disguise because if Curlin didn’t win the Derby, it will be hard for Dunkirk to. I think he will be waiting to pounce in the Preakness.

Ok, I Want Revenge romps this weekend. Pluses…this should be an easy win for him. He shouldn’t have to exert himself too much as the field is a little light in terms of depth, and he is an immensely talented individual with an absolutely beautiful way of going. Minuses…he has shipped back and forth across the country several times, which definitely takes a lot out of a horse.

Old Fashioned…toss for the KY Derby. He is a lovely animal, but I think that he has distance limitations. Win Willy is not just a one race wonder and wins again in Arkansas. Old Fashioned gets a piece of the Arkansas.

The Pamplemousse and Pioneerof the Nile are in the same boat. They are both extremely talented and distance isn’t a question (The Pamp gets his distance on his dam’s side). Julio loves the Champ, and when he speaks that highly of a horse, I tend to shut up and listen. However, the dirt surface is definitely a question for both animals… Also, PON sure has raced a whole lot. He won’t be as fresh as some of these others, but he’ll get all the help from BB and Go-Go will most likely be riding.

Fresian Fire (sp?..I always spell it wrong). I DON’T like the fact that he is training up to the KY Derby.

Musket Man…there is something that I like about this horse. Will he be the overlooked horse that shows up in this year’s derby? Could be… Not on too many top 10 lists, but I think that he should be at this point. Of course, he’ll probably run poorly up yonder now that I said this…

SA Derby Handicapping…

First off, this is a super competitive race…

PON didn’t look so sharp in his last start. May have bounced from his previous effort. Looking to rebound.

The Pamplemousse…didn’t like his workout the other day. Figure 8 added…problem is hopefully fixed. He looked fantastic in his last workout. He is a target in the SA Derby, and a rabbit is entered. Outside post. The Champ has a lot to overcome.

Chocolate Candy…the horse that I will be playing because the price will be right. Working tremendously and he is a fresh horse. He is ready to go. Not a target. He is defintely the dark horse with not a whole lot of negatives.

Rooting for Grapefruit because he’s awesome…money on Candy. I will be disappointed if I cash the ticket on Candy.

These are my thoughts right now. They may change tomorrow.

Filly 85, thanks for posting such an interesting analysis. Crossing my fingers for the P, he’s the one who grabbed me from the beginning, and I think has a sound mind on top of everything else.

It’s a shame Julio Canani perhaps/may have took the celebrations a day later a bit too far …[/QUOTE]

The aforementioned charge of driving under the influence has been dropped the Los Angeles Superior Court

Canani received the “notice to dismiss” order Thursday morning from L.A. County Superior Court and was relieved to put the episode behind him as he prepares The Pamplemousse for the Santa Anita Derby on Saturday.

A more positive ok off-beat bit of coverage on Julio

Pasadena Star-News 4-2-09 “Canani brings color to track”

You’re not likely to meet a more colorful guy than the man whom fellow trainer Bob Baffert nicknamed “Kramer,” after the “Seinfeld” character.

“He acts just like Kramer, throwing his hands around and going crazy, that’s him,” Baffert said. “He’s the Peruvian version of Kramer.”

AP photo: Apr 1, 2009 Baffert & Canani

When I see him I’m reminded of the Dos Equis guy

Word on the grapevine…

The officers assummed Canani was drunk and just hauled him off to jail. The charges were dropped because he demanded to have a blood test, which, by the looks of the dropped charges, came back clean.

Shame on the police officers that hauled him off to jail in the first place!

It’s rained extremely hard in Chicago last night and the weather is not expected to improve too much more, so the chances for Giant Oak to scratch in the Illinois Derby have increased. In case it wasn’t noted bfeore he would have a new jockey if he does race - Shaun Bridgmohan.

Hawthorne is relatively on the edge of the City so the Chicago weather forecast applies.

Maybe this was mentioned before, but I just got confirmation that the Wood will not be shown live except for the Madison Garden channel (not familiar with it so I may be a bit off on the name). TVG will show it on tape delay:(

Does anyone know for sure if the SA derby will be live on HRTV or?

The Wood Memorial will be aired on both TVG and HRTV. Although I wouldn’t be shocked if NYRA requested a video delay by TVG and HRTV if MSG has some priority market rights.

The Illinois Derby and Santa Anita Derby will both be on NBC Sports. The SA live and I suspect IL Derby on a tape delay. NBC’s coverage starts at 5pm Eastern and goes to 6pm.

Very, very far from reality there, Filly. A little lesson on DUI: Depending on how long after the last drink the test was done, the BAL well could have been below the legal limit, hence no legal standing for charges. Which is not nearly the same or even close to coming back clean; the BAL could merely have been .079%, rather than .08% at the time the test was taken – which is the legal standing, not the BAL at the time he was arrested. It takes time to get a blood test.

That’s why one should never, ever take a Breathlyzer or field sobriety test. Or so my friends in the legal and criminal justice fields tell me.

And, really, “shame”? Please. Better to err on the side of caution than clean up the mess a drunk driver leaves behind.

Julio has been … um … amusing since long before whichever wife it was threw him out for breaking his leg on an unauthorized ski trip while he was supposed to be training horses. :stuck_out_tongue:

Meanwhile, as no doubt talented as the Grapefruit and POTN are, never, ever say no to Candy. Particularly Chocolate Candy.

His breathalyzer test was a 0.3.

BTW, chocolate candy is always nice:)

Friday, at SA, Alex Solis won the 6th on Aggie Engineer. Got to be a confidence booster. Also the LA Times did a nice feature on Solis today.

:eek::eek: How was he even standing?

Legally drunk in most states is .08. If he was .3 he would have been comatose or near to it. Maybe you mean .03?

Clearly off on a tangent here - but 0.74 BAC - Highest recorded blood alcohol level by a US hospital

While 0.30 BAC - Loss of orientation as to time and place

Yes, the article said .03. I kind of left off a zero there…my mistake.

Pamplemousse scratched!

I’m so upset! What’s the reason? We were just heading out the door when a friend called. I noticed Julio was hand testing his body yesterday in schooling area, like maybe for fever?

Alex Solis II was on TVG saying there was heat in his one tendon so they opted out. Also said if everything checks out okay they’ll be headed to the Bluegrass next week.
