2009 KY Derby 135th edition; final post-position/odds p28

I actually think that the BG Stakes may be a better spot for him because the competition is setting up to be a lot lighter. He won’t have a far van ride from Keeneland to Louisville either;)

However, tendons are no joke. I’m hoping that he checks out ok, but I’m not holding my breath. This is definitely a huge setback for the horse.

Musket Man…the forgotten horse wins the Illinois Derby. I really like this horse.

I Want Revenge wins as expected.

Stardom Bound flops as expected.

Take the Points didn’t scratch. And I can’t bet Chocolate Candy at that price. Taking the Pletcher horse instead…Take the Points. First time two turns last out, and had just shipped all the way across the country. Soft pace, and looking to improve off his second place finish to the Mousse last out. Already gone the distance once.

Scratch that. I decided not to play the race…

Im a huge Musket Man fan. Been following him since he broke his maiden. I do have a riding interest in him, tho. I own a sister to his dam, so this is some really nice updates in her immediate family.

I freely admit to being biased this year. I will know Monday if my mare is carrying a foal by the sire of the KY Derby favorite. Who ever thought I would get to type that sentence!?

Can someone post a link to the Wood Memorial replay?
Where did Imperial Council wind up?

That was the Wood Memorial replay that I posted. See above

Thanksf or that post.

Wow, I don’t know who showed more guts in the Wood, I Want Revenge or the rider!

I SO wish he didn’t have the IEAH connection. I just can’t stand those guys.

I was in the winners circle and didn’t see Iavarone. I wonder if he was at the Ashland watching Stardom Bound get whupped?

A question about Dunkirk and the money problems

First of all, I will admit, I don’t know alot about racing, but am a fan from a long time back. IF Pletcher knew Dunkirk was something special, why didn’t he take a more conventional route? I know I know ‘whats best for the horse’, and they all go on at their own pace, but everyone seems to think he was robbed, and what a cryin shame if he can’t start in the Ky Derby. But aren’t the rules the same for everyone? Didn’t he know this could be a problem? Were there no contingency plans? Fl Derby was the first time I actually saw him run, and he was impressive. But others have actually been RUNNING to get enough money to get in. There seem to be a lot of very nice horses this year, but I cannot understand the wringing of the hands over the possible exclusion of Dunkirk.

The connections of Stardom Bound, who I thought wasn’t impressive last time and her effort yesterday just added to that, might even skip the Kentucky Oaks

Rick Dutrow, the filly’s trainer of record for the first time after taking over from Bobby Frankel, said he’d wait to decide on her status for the May 1 Oaks at Churchill Downs.

“I didn’t see what I wanted,” Dutrow said.

She was ahead of the development curve for a while but I think the rest of the fillies have cought up and she never was seriously impressive enough to smoke this year’s crop of males. She couldn’t have won the Santa Anita Derby let alone Kentucky Derby IMHO.

As for the Kentucky Oaks I said it before and will repeat: Rachel Alexandra would knock her into next Tuesday - she’s that much more tough.

Welp, the Mousse is off the trail.

Ouch! I suspected that the tendon injury if bad enough to niix him from the SAB could be an issue for being 100% for the KYD.

Looks like Dunkirk might just get in afterall. With no upsets in the IL Derby, Wood, and SA Derby that means horses already assured of a slot just reaffirmed their position. Thus no really new horses much further down the list moved up, bumping off anyone.

The Blue Grass could vault in a single new name but mixed with injuries (like The Pamplemousse) will continue, thus removing names. Clearly Stardom Bound is no Derby entry (and questionable for the Oaks) so that too is one less name.

The Pamplemousse is out for the rest of the year.

Well I don’t think it’s that long

DRF “The Pamplemousse out six months”

“We’ll give him a significant amount of time,” [co-owner Alex Solis II] said. "He’s not done yet by any means. If Julio Canani wants to give him six months, he can give him six months. If he wants to give him a year, he can give him a year. I have full confidence in Julio Canani.

At New York’s Aqueduct, California-based I Want Revenge showed no ill effects of his troubled trip in the Wood.

“He came out of the race real well,” trainer Jeff Mullins said. “We had him out this morning, went over him from head to toe, and everything looks good.”

I Want Revenge is headed to Churchill Downs on Monday, and Mullins plans to join him there after returning to California for two days.

West Side Bernie, second behind I Want Revenge, is headed to Kentucky, but fourth-place finisher Atomic Rain may be pointed toward the Preakness on May 16.

Regarding jockey Garrett Gomez: Baffert said he hasn’t thought about whether Gomez will be his Derby jockey [aboard Pioneerof The Nile]. Which is interesting as GoGo is also the jockey for Dunkirk.

Not specifically related to the Derby but it could have implications…

Mullins horse was scratched from the Bay Shore with about 30 minutes to post because he got caught with a syring, about to administer Air Power to the colt. YIKES!

Definitely a brain fart on his part but something that could be done in any other venue without anyone batting an eye.

It will definitely be that long. He will need at least six months off because he has a small tear in his tendon. Then, it will take him quite a few months to get him ready for a race again, if he is ever able to run again. He is out for the year, meaning that he won’t race again this year. I just hope he can make a come back like Georgie Boy did.

Hopefully, by the time that he starts winning again, my mare will be in foal on the same Fappiano/Blushing Groom line. But, I’m getting ahead of myself.

Mullins is certainly no Boy Scout with past infractions just as the same could be said for Rick Dutrow. To be clear just about every big name trainer has some violation on their official record - from Todd Pletcher to Larry Jones.

Some perspective from 4-years ago …Albany (NY) Law School - Government Law Center: March 2005 “The Milkshake That Keeps On Giving”

TB Times Apr 5, 2009 Graded Earnings List - note this contains a horse like Crowded House (GB) who isn’t going to the Derby per published comments.

A horse like #32 (per this list) D. Wayne Lukas’ Flying Private will be in the Arkansas Derby against Old Fashion and Win Willy. With that race being $1M even getting 3rd place could nudge him onto the bubble with possible gate space.
