Mr. Hot Stuff looked drop dead gorgeous in the Paddock at SA Derby. But he’s 29 on the list.
Drop dead gorgeous just like his older brother He might still get in after the defections.
Square Eddie *may be back on the trail (see DRF) but he will train up to the Derby.
I know West Side Bernie isn’t on a lot of Top 10 lists, but I really really like him. He may not set the world on fire, not sure he’s even a Derby horse, but he’s classy, I get exited when he starts, and I’m just a fan darnit.
March 25th it was cited (on this thread) that Square Eddie IS being pointed to the Derby
However his trainer sounded less then confident that he was up for the task. If people think FF had a long gap of time off with 6-weeks then this is the equivalent of light years!
A bit foolish if you ask me. They’d be better served putting him in an allowance race this week just to see how he fares before trying the KY Derby “cold”.
Sorry for being redundant.
Not at all - just pointing out that the Square Eddie folks are suggesting they’ll run for a while, but I think it is doubtful myself
Nothing to get too worked up about but Quality Road has a quarter crack in his right rear hoof
Lameness specialist Ian McKinlay had applied wires to stabilize the crack on Sunday, drf.com said.
Trainer Jimmy Jerkens said he is “very concerned,” but that it is premature to rule out the Derby. He said Quality Road should be able to make Derby if he can get in two good workouts.
When called in Friday, McKinlay pulled off the patch and reshod the colt with a three-quarter bar shoe.
Quality Road is not expected to train Tuesday, and McKinlay is to examine the foot on Wednesday.
Video: Ian fixing a quarter crack from last May (not Big Brown)
I would be very concerned as well. no hoof no horse.
cr@p
Big Brown had no hooves, mostly silicone and some wires!
There was the interesting comment about Mr Hot Stuff from Donna Brothers about how immature he looked, she said he looked like a 2-year-old in the fall (end of the year) rather than a 3 yr old.
If she’s accurate, I hope they don’t push him into the Triple Crown hunt and instead keep him training and in lower level races and bring him out to the big leagues at Saratoga.
Re: Mr Hot Stuff (named for the owner’s son-in-law - eh, creepy!)
Mr. Hot Stuff is named for the nickname bestowed upon Bill and Susan Casner’s son-in-law, Clark Anderson, after he wore an outrageously multicolored ski outfit on the slopes four years ago, highlighted by a bright pink hat that said, “Hot Stuff.”
Has has “only” $114k in graded earnings now and no chance in heck that Eoin would run him back in the Blue Grass or Arkansas Derby - the last two big graded earnigs chance.
So essentially at #27 now (dropping off Crowded House @ 18 and The Pamplemouse @ 19) Mr. Hot Stuff I’ll be willing to wager won’t make the Kentucky Derby.

I’d have to seriously disagree he looks immature now based on what I saw here (lots of pre-race footage - Santa Anita):

Mr Hot Stuff is a serious hottie - as we’ve come to expect from Tiznow get. He’s got that WOW factor.
Again - a Rick Dutrow-like-view of using meds: Mullins on his NYRA rule violation from Saturday
Racing association officials said the rules were clear. “It doesn’t really matter what the substance was — you cannot give a horse anything on raceday in New York,” said Stephen Duncker, the racing association’s chairman.
Mullins said he had been using Air Power, which its maker, Finish Line, says on its Web site will not test positive at any American racetrack. He likened it to a liquid cough drop. He said Gato Go Win did not have a cold, but added that Air Power had become part of his prerace routine for most of his horses.
“It could have been the other horse getting scratched,” Mullins said, referring to I Want Revenge, who, two races later, overcame a rough trip to win the $750,000 Wood Memorial and stamp himself as the early Derby favorite.
I won’t go into what that might suggest but needless to say this is just another high profile runner with some potential baggage linked to the trainer’s routines.
Mullins could not clearly articulate what advantage he believed the substance gave his horses if they did not have a cough.
“Why do you put socks on with your shoes?” he responded.
Uh, sure …
DRF 4-6-09 “Mullins under scrutiny for medication”
Mullins indicated Monday that had he not been made aware that giving the medication to Gato Go Win was a violation, he likely would have given it to I Want Revenge as well.
Mullins said he is not sure if I Want Revenge was given Air Power before his 8 1/2-length victory in last month’s Gotham, also at Aqueduct. Mullins, who said a bottle of Air Power did go with the horse to the security barn that day, said that he was not at the security barn prior to that race, and that he had to hire two employees from trainer Tony Dutrow’s staff to go in with the horse because his help could not get licensed.
To be clear this Air Power product is not an illegal or banned substance. Merely the administration of anything while a horse is in the detention barn is a no-go.
Theregoesjojo - again into the ‘trenches’ to try and find gold
Two weeks after racing against Dunkirk in the Florida Derby (and taking 3rd) he’s popped up as an entry for the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes.
At least 11 3-year-olds are under consideration for the Grade 1 Blue Grass, for which entries were to be drawn Wednesday. Most of them, including Theregoesjojo, need a good finish - and the graded earnings - to advance to the May 2 Kentucky Derby, although Hold Me Back and Mafaaz already can claim Derby berths.
Calvin Borel will have the mount on Theregoesjojo, who was second to Quality Road in the Fountain of Youth before the March 28 Florida Derby.
(Theregoesjojo has $133,063 in graded earnings - which is about 24th spot; a 3rd place finish in the Blue Grass might earn him enough)
I Want Revenge was very impressive considering he was constantly in trouble throughout the race. BUT again we have another good horse tainted by his trainer’s sins. Another good move for the health of horse racing.
I sincerely hope that Mr Mullin’s is aware of the rules in Kentucky.
Mr Mullins,
Note to self, when running outside of my home state it is prudent to be aware of procedures and medications that are frowned upon.
Theregoesjojo
I bet on him in the FOY and then again in the FD. Maybe this time I will cash a ticket

That could be a smart bet BTW Liza your local track did some banner business on Sunday!
GGF had on Sun 4-5-09 their largest crowd since since Feb. 20, 1995 - not bad The day after Keeneland (on Ashland Stakes day) had their fifth-largest crowd in the track’s 73-year history - 30,500!
That was fast: two Derby starters are already at Churchill Downs
I Want Revenge arrived at Churchill Downs early Tuesday, April 7. Illinois’ Derby winner Musket Man arrived at the track on Sunday following a van ride from Chicago’s Hawthorne Race Course.
Pioneerof the Nile is schedule to arrive at Churchill Downs on April 14.
Beyer Speed Figs for the three winners over the weekend: 103 Beyer for I Want Revenge; 96 for Pioneerof the Nile; 98 for Musket Man.
The drawn field for the 73rd running of the Grade 2 Arkansas Derby $1,000,000

Then 10 trainers tied with 2 wins
As mentioned the worries of Quality Road being out with that quarter crack were not to be …
DRF April 8, 2009 “Quality Road gallops”
Quality Road, a leading contender for the Kentucky Derby, passed a significant test in his bid to make that race, galloping 1 3/8 miles at Belmont Park on Wednesday morning after having a new patch applied to the quarter crack on his right hind foot.
“He galloped good, looked like he’s walking all right on it. Hopefully he comes out of the stall good this afternoon,” trainer Jimmy Jerkens said Wednesday morning.
[on Wednesday] McKinlay said Quality Road’s foot was “ice-cold” and McKinlay put a new patch on the foot. Also, Quality Road was equipped with a regular shoe, replacing the bar shoe he had been wearing while there was no patch on the foot.
