I’m seeing Old Fashioned all over the Arkansas Derby myself.

I think that folks have forgotten about Old Fashioned

Haskins BloodHorse 4-9-09 “Ky. Derby Trail: Old Fashioned Blunder”

But if Old Fashioned is the horse Larry Jones believes he is, and yours truly once believed he was, then why shouldn’t we see fireworks on Saturday? He definitely needed his last race after an ill-advised early move by Ramon Dominguez, who apparently misjudged the fast fractions over a heavy track. All that no doubt combined to take their toll on the horse. But that race might actually help him in the long run.

And I strong concur here too:

From a personal standpoint, here’s hoping Flying Private runs well enough to earn a place in the Kentucky Derby field, because I miss Wayne Lukas. For most years, the daily ritual of covering the Derby began with my arrival on the backstretch each morning well before the Derby trainers…with the exception of Lukas, who was at his barn well before I arrived.

Yeah, yeah…but I’m just saying…

I’d say Dunkirk is at 20th - as Stardom Bound would make no sense in the KY Derby - but I’d expect him by Sunday evening to be pushed back to maybe 24th

Interesting - from Win Willy’s trainer Mac Robertson during the NTRA conference call April 7, 2009:

I understand winning one other isn’t much, but you know he did win going 5-1/2, and then won going 6 furlongs here. So he’s got a - that turn a foot. He just - you know we hope we get a good trip, and come back well. If he runs first or second in Arkansas Derby, he’ll go to the Kentucky Derby. If he doesn’t, we’ll probably freshen him up, and look at the fall instead of beating him up for the classics.

He has enough money so that if he takes 3rd he’ll be assured a Derby gate.

Ouch - how a once mighty (ok, high expectation) contender on the Derby trail appears elsewhere:

Entries Keeneland Race 3 FRI Apr 10, 2009 3 Year Old Allowance race for $54k

#5 Hello Broadway

(He has just $63,800 in graded money and will not make the Derby)

ESPN2 (“the Duce”) to air G2 Arkansas Derby live

As a reminder it will be ESPN2 airing the Grade 2 Arkansas Derby $1M live today

TVG exclusively airs the Blue Grass Stakes today as well

Without going back over this whole thread, what are Friesan Fire’s chances?

Exceptionally good chances and will be one of the top 5 prospects easily. The only rub is the layoff between his last race and the Derby which will be rather significant.

In regards to Square Eddie he’s being pointed to next weekend’s Grade 2 Coolmore Lexington at Keeneland! (I’ll be there to see if it happens) Which means a very short break if he indeed is wheeled back to the Kentucky Derby!

Hurray for General Quarters!

I try not to root for anyone-I seem to be such a jinx. But I am pleased for GQ and his connections.

who else finished in the money?!?!

Hold Me Back, then Gomez on Massone!

Yep - lovely win for General Quarters in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes and a very solid 2nd for Hold Me Back. 3rd went to Massone with GoGo up.

Kempton winner and KYD guaranteed starting slot Mafaaz (GB) didn’t appear to finish in the top five so I wonder if they’ll go to the Derby after all?

top 3 finishers

General Quarters
Hold Me Back
Massone

General Quarters clearly was overlooked by the punters in the Blue Grass Stakes as he paid off $30.60 for a $2 wager to win

Arkansas Derby

No surprize, is being pre empted by La Crosse. I cannot wait till these things come up again and ESPN who used to do a terrific job of this will get with it, or get out of it. You don’t think they would ever deelay the start of anything else for racing do you?

They have been showing it on ESPN classic…they will move it back when the lacrosse finishes.

Arkansas Derby

Papa Clem is the winner. Old Fashioned ran fast fractions, but his jock said before the race, basically that he wouldn’t rate. If the brakes were applied, he would run faster. Well, he didn’t lose by much, but the time wasn’t fast either. A good race, and Aaron V’s horse Summer Bird got up for third.

Any thoughts/predictions on jockeys?
Some obviously have to make a choice: I’m wondering if Eibar Coa will stick with Musket Man or ride General Quarters? Looks like Dunkirk will get in so who will Garrett Gomez ride?
