Old Fashioned had a good break for the gate and did run well.
Old Fashioned out with a slab fracture. Doubt we’ll see him return at all. I am sorry to see him go as I do like his trainer a lot but being that my mare is in foal to Stephen Got Even I am glad to see less competition for I Want Revenge!

Per DRF, he came out of the race with a non-displaced slab fracture to his right knee. He is a really nice horse, and I hope he heals well and can make it back in the future (although, realistically he probably will retire).

Yep - the sad news 4-11-09 “Old Fashioned injured in Arkansas Derby”
Old Fashioned is out of the Kentucky Derby after emerging from his second-place finish in the Grade 2, $1 million Arkansas Derby on Saturday with a non-displaced slab fracture to his right knee, said his trainer, Larry Jones. The horse is scheduled to ship Monday to Lexington, Ky., where he could have surgery at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital.
“It’s not life-threatening, it should be okay,” Jones said. “Career-ending is a possibility just because of the type of horse he is. But we’ll see. We’ll let them make that call.”
Kempton winner and KYD guaranteed starting slot Mafaaz (GB) didn’t appear to finish in the top five so I wonder if they’ll go to the Derby after all?
Per the DRF - Mafaaz is only a maybe for going to Churchill:
Mafaaz, the British invader who already has an automatic Derby berth, faded to finish eighth. His connections said beforehand they would have to carefully consider whether to actually run in case of a subpar effort.
D. Wayne Lukas’ trained Flying Private earned for his 5th place (just one behind Win Willy) $30,000 in graded money. This puts him, with $94,000 already, at $124,000. With all of the drop outs and “maybes” in the 22nd rank or thereabouts. Maybe enough to get in …
I finally get home from work & horse duty, sit down to watch the AR Derby which I recorded through my 'puter, sift through the LAX , get to the actual race…and right as the horses are coming down the stretch – the recording ends because it ran over time! Aaaargh!
Then I come here and read Old Fashioned is out.
Darn! Double bummer!

You can watch it on youtube
Thanks. I already watched the replay; I was just hoping to see it without knowing the outcome beforehand.
What about the others in the Arkansas Derby?
Summer Birdwho finished third in the Arkansas Derby in only his third career start, will be pointed to the Lone Star Derby on May 9, trainer Tim Ice said Sunday morning.
They want to race him in the Belmont Stakes
Win Willy who finished fourth in the Arkansas Derby, is still under consideration for the Kentucky Derby, trainer Mac Robertson said Sunday.
“We’ll see in about a week how he’s doing and how the rest are doing,” Robertson said.
I read that. Really, really sorry about it too.
But watching the race he did break cleanly and looked good.
I wasn’t familiar with Summer Bird prior to Saturday. He caught my eye in the post parade and I’d love to see him again in the Belmont. I’m a Birdstone fan.
I’m suspect of a lot of these earnings lists as they tend to exclude some on one but include new ones on another. BloodHorse 4-14-09 “Derby Earnings - Who’s In and Who’s Out?”
Per that list and more injuries (sadly) always do occur before the Derby plus the Coolmore Lexington Stakes this weekend is one last chance for a few new entries …
- Regal Ransom: $1,250,000
- Pioneerof the Nile: $1,193,250
- Square Eddie: $774,981
- I Want Revenge: $774,000
- Papa Clem: $760,000
- Desert Party: $641,667
- Quality Road: $600,000
- General Quarters: $595,645
- Friesan Fire: $570,465
- Musket Man: $485,000
- Terrain (g): $448,330
- Hold Me Back: $438,000
- West Side Bernie: $385,160
- Chocolate Candy: $370,000
- Win Willy: $230,000
- Bittel Road: $211,000
- Giant Oak: $169,256
- Dunkirk: $150,000
- Mine That Bird (g): $138,705
- Theregoesjojo: $133,063
- Flying Private $124,000
- Massone: $115,000
- Mr. Hot Stuff $114,000
- Summer Bird $100,000
- Take the Points $85,000
I see Square Eddie dropping off unless he has a sensational Coolmore run and even then running back so soon (after being off all of 2009) seems unlikely. Win Willy’s connections I suppose have nothing to lose (neither do say Bittel Road) but I can’t say they are rolling into Churchill with confidence.
Scratch from the Derby: Terrain - is off the Kentucky Derby trail and will be pointed toward the Lone Star Derby a week later
Not a surprise but from Rick Porter’s blog he’s retired Old Fashioned
The surgery went very well this morning. Dr Bramlage told me that it would be almost impossible for him to return to anywhere near his level as a racehorse. After my discussion with Dr Bramlage, I decided to retire him. I am not sure if I will stand him myself in either Kentucky or possibly Florida next year. There is always the possibility of selling him as a stallion prospect.
Song of Soloman came out of her race Saturday with knee problems. She is being examined by Dr Bramlage this afternoon. I will report on the web site as soon as I speak with him.
On a better note, Larry was very happy with Friesan Fire’s workout.
Will less then 20 horses start in this year’s Kentucky Derby? Not likely as the money is too good for some connections. However just anyone who wants to go - and has proven worthy with a graded stakes win - will get it.
Courier-Journal 4-15-09 “All prominent horses might get in Derby”
Highly regarded Florida Derby runner-up Dunkirk should easily make the field. Earlier this month he appeared in danger of missing the maximum 20-horse field based on graded earnings.
That should spare Churchill Downs some second-guessing over whether the track should change its preference system, particularly this year with an automatic starting spot being given to Mafaaz for winning the Kentucky Derby Challenge Stakes in England.
An increasing number of Derby handicappers emphasize those finishes to predict which horses are best equipped to run the Derby’s 1¼ miles and which are in good form, or perhaps tailing off.
Anything in the 12-second range for the final eighth-mile of a 11/8-mile prep is regarded as impressive, as is anything under 38 seconds for the final three-eighths.
Those who were/are on the bubble:
If a slot opens up: Mr. Hot Stuff (Colonel John’s full brother) will go to the Derby
If a slot opens up: Flying Private trained D. Wayne Lukas is in. Further, Lukas said Flying Private suffered a breathing obstruction in the Arkansas Derby.
If a slot opens up: Charitable Man (7th in the Blue Grass) might actually go to the Derby instead of the initial plans of pointing him toward the Travers.
If a slot opens up: Mine That Bird (4th in the Sunland Derby) is a maybe
Guaranteed if he wants it - based on earnings - Giant Oak, (2nd in the Illinois Derby) currently stabled at Hawthorne Race Course will be either ruled in or out next week by his connections.
Julien Leparoux to ride General Quarters in the Kentucky Derby
Eibar Coa, his prior jockey, has opted instead to ride Musket Man, winner of the Tampa Bay Derby and Illinois Derby.
Last call for adding to the graded stakes money …
To be aired on ESPN2 … luckily I’ll get to see it in person

I wouldn’t be shocked if Parade Clown gets up for a finish in the money …
One horse that could go if he wanted to but his connections won’t is: Big Drama. However we should see him in the 2nd leg of the Triple Crown at Old Hilltop:
“If everything works out right, we’ll go directly into the Preakness, with the Lone Star Derby as our backup plan,” Fawkes confirmed on Wednesday. “Obviously going to the Derby is very tempting, but it’s a long year and Mr. Queen wants to do what’s best for his horse and not burn him out in one day. We had considered running in the Withers as a prep for the Preakness, but ultimately decided to give him a little more time coming off his last start. If you look back on the form, the bigger the break he’s had, the faster he runs.”
Sheik Hamdan has decided not to run Mafaaz in the Derby. The horse will however stay stateside, as expected, and has been transfered to the care of Kiaran McLaughlin, as expected.
