2013 Kentucky Derby 139th Edition: congrats to Orb (Shug, Joel, Phipps/Janney)
But where is Bob? Not likely at the Derby with any runners
Dang, that means no Power Broker, either. :frowning:

No even a full field for this year’s Kentucky Derby? Very possible. The latest (Monday afternoon)

Winning Cause, Tiz a Minister ruled out; field at 19

NBC television coverage for the 2013 Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Oaks also will air on the NBC Sports Network on Friday at 5 p.m.

On Saturday, coverage of the Kentucky Derby begins at 11 a.m. EST on the NBC Sports Network.

Coverage then switches to NBC at 4 p.m. EST, before returning to NBC Sports Network at 7 p.m. for post-Derby coverage.

Always a changing situation and the lure of being just in the Derby is too great for even those without much of a chance will step up. The latest from the DRF (3:30 pm) Monday

But there was one late surprise Monday afternoon, with Fear the Kitten being added to the prospective lineup. So, as of Monday evening, there were 20 runners known to be likely to enter the Derby on Wednesday morning, with post positions to be drawn Wednesday evening on the NBC Sports Network from 5-6 pm Eastern.

Dallas Stewart, the trainer of Golden Soul, who moved up the depth chart and into the Derby field because all the defections came from horses ranked higher on the points list than Golden Soul, who has a mere 14 points.

Mike Maker, trainer of Fear The Kitten, having just 6-points gets Alan Garcia to ride.

Maybe folks are all riding for show money as Orb impressed everyone this morning in his work with workmate Overwhelming (ridden ironically by Joel Rosario) … to say Joel is white hot right now is an understatement of monumental proportions. He absolutely crushed it at Keeneland for the meet and won four races on Saturday’s opening night for Churchill Downs.

Orb even tweeted he was happy but felt for Overwhelming

Previously reports suggested less than 20-starters …

Tue 4/30/13 entry changes … not so fast there Fear the Kitten, you might get bumped from Derby dreams after all … Bloodhorse is reporting ā€œGiant Finish a Late Addition to Derby Fieldā€

Giant Finish who has 10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby and therefore bumps hopeful Fear the Kitten, who has 6 points, from spot 20 to the also-eligible list in the field for the 1 1/4-mile Classic.

Additionally, the partnership group headed by Dr. Mark Dedomenico that now owns Carving is considering a run in the Derby. The horse is based at Emerald Downs with trainer Mike Puhich, who told Churchill officials that a May 2 flight to Louisville is on standby should there be any defections. Carving is ranked No. 22 on the Derby leaderboard with 2 points.

Seriously a horse with 2-points a possible (albeit remote) entry? This sounds as odd - IMHO - as 1998 when the maiden, Nationalore, was going to entered. He finished 9th in the Derby and the year before 3rd in the BC JV before breaking down in a race at Hollywood Park he had gone 0-24 yet earned $318,227.

Tweet 4/30/13: Dallas Stewart names Robby Albarado to ride Golden Soul in Derby.

21 horses entered in for the $2M 1 1/4-mi Kentucky Derby, almost assuring that the max field of 20 starters will go off.

The Also Eligible (in, provided there is a scratch before 9am Friday) horse is Fear the Kitten - who is not owned by Ken Ramsey, he bred him, but rather Frank D. Irvin.

Entries - below - the drawing for PP is today at 5pm EST on NBC Sports Channel

Note that Todd Pletcher will saddle an jaw dropping 25% of the entire field with 5 colts! His former boss will saddle an additional 2!

The other 20 horses that are entered, in alphabetical order, are:

Black Onyx
Charming Kitten
Falling Sky
Fear the Kitten
Frac Daddy
Giant Finish
Golden Soul
Goldencents
Itsmyluckyday
Java’s War
Lines of Battle
Mylute
Normandy Invasion
Orb
Overanalyze
Oxbow
Palace Malice
Revolutionary
Verrazano
Vyjack
Will Take Charge

Owner Ken Ramsey indicated today that Edgar Prado would ride Charming Kitten.

If you see a red eyed horse still a bit sleepy it’s likely the Aidan O’Brien trainee!

Lines of Battle (Coolmore Stable) arrived at around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, the UAE Derby winner, arrived from Ireland. He is expected to be released from quarantine in time to train Friday. His jockey remains Ryan Moore.

And the 139th Kentucky Derby field was picked with Verrazano getting the best spot for his style … although the Morning Line favorite is Orb at 7/2. Likely the worst spot for his style is Vyjack with GG up in the 20 slot.

By the way earlier today at Churchill, like something out of the movie Seabiscuit with a tractor noise spooking a horse … Orb spooked while schooling at Churchill Downs

The incident occurred because a lift being used to hang banners on a signpost adjacent to the paddock was fired up just as the horses for the first race as well as the schooling Orb were about to settle into their stalls. The sound of the motor startled a horse who was in the first race, and he reared up and fell over near the stall where Orb was schooling.

Several onlookers repeatedly tried to get the lift operator to shut off the motor, but he did not hear them until others ran to the lift and told him to shut it down.

Orb continued to kick the back of his stall, but both exercise rider Jenn Patterson and assistant trainer Robbie Medina had a hold of lead shanks on either side of him, and he settled down after a few minutes.

Interesting commercial partnership - Rosie and Mars are promoting Snickers Bites

Today Mars Chocolate North America officially partnered with Rosie by announcing SNICKERSĀ® Brand will give away 1 million SNICKERSĀ® Bites – which are unwrapped, bite-sized versions of the hunger-satisfying candy bar – if she wins the famous race on May 4.

I wonder if she’ll wear Snickers on her pant legs

 Quote of the week!!!

LOL!!! But does anyone else see the irony of having a jockey promote a candy bar-even if it is ā€œbite-sizeā€.

I’ve picked Will Take Charge as my sleeper horse this year.

Does DRF still offer free Derby PPs? I haven’t been on their site on forever and all I could find we’re links to buy things.

I was really, really impressed with Goldencent’s SA derby. I think, if they can keep him settled, he’s my ā€œsleeperā€.

My REAL pick? Revolutionary. We all know that there can be traffic trouble in the derby and Revolutionary has handled all types of bad trips- and won. He also has Borel in the irons. He’s the master of finding holes and GOING.

I had the same thought this morning - hope this link works for you:

Another free PP option - Equibase has the Derby free past performances

So, admittedly, I haven’t been paying a lot of attention to the Derby yet this year. I’m usually much more up to date on it, but was so distracted with other stuff that it has completely snuck up on me.

That being said…

Am I on glue, or does that say that Gary Stevens is riding?!
