2013 Saratoga Meet - celebrating 150th Anniversary

As expected - no magical Traver’s match-up of the separate individual Derby, Preakness, and Belmont winners: Oxbow (Preakness winner) will skip and continue his recovery

“I pretty much resolved that we’re not going to try and make the Travers,” Lukas said. “We may look at the Pennsylvania Derby [on Sept. 21] or something like that. That’s more realistic.”

That leaves - Orb, Palace Malice, Will Take Charge, Verrazano, Moreno, Transparent, Romansh, and Java’s War.

With a crack of the whip - expect Fiftyshadesofhay to appear in the Grade 1 Alabama at Saratoga on Aug. 17

The owners standings, through and including Monday 8/5/13, by wins, [earnings]:

By the way if you stopped off at Dunkin’ Donuts on South Broadway in Saratoga Springs, NY, on Monday, August 5 - you may have noticed a different people working the window!

Yep - in that video its John Velazquez (along with Javier Castellano and Irad Ortiz, Jr.) who surprised guests with their order … plus Clubhouse tickets to Saratoga Race Course, Saratoga Race Course-themed Dunkin’ Donuts cards, and T-shirts.

The jockeys appeared as part of an ongoing program to promote the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund, a beneficiary of the Travers Celebration which Dunkin’ Donuts helps to support.

Nice!

With Wednesday racing it was a bummer for H. James Bond in Race 5 - New York Stallion Series Stakes (which used to be the Cab Calloway) as the initial order was an upset with Orino (12-1) going gate to wire under Luis Saez for Bond and his wife, Tina, the owner. Heavy favorite West Hills Giant (3-5) finished 2nd … but not so fast.

Inquiry in the stretch run - Review - Review - Replay - Replay - DQ - and replacing the finish: West Hills Giant winner and Orino placed second. That would’ve been James Bond’s first win of the meet but alas he’s still winless.

Video replay - Race 5: $100,000, New York Stallion Series S.

Is Eblouissante still at Saratoga? Any rumors when she might run again?

Yes, as noted a couple days ago. However no recorded works yet and Shirreffs is keeping tight lipped on her next race - but it will be at Saratoga unless there is an unexpected setback. I don’t expect her to appear in a graded stakes race in her return.

Anyone know of any good books (travel, perhaps) that describe both the city and the track? Something with photos would be a big plus.

And Barbara Livingston posted a photo today on FB with Ebby & her exercise rider…

An ugly fall in the first race - the steeplechase for the gals the $75,000 Mrs. Ogden Phipps Stakes for mares 4-yrs old and up

Jockey Archibald Kingsley Jr., on Hunter Forward, fell and was not moving.

The field was waved around the fence when he was not moved in time. Per tweets “[Kingsley] was strapped to board and placed in ambulance. Horse appears fine. Watching the head-on replay, it looks like Kingsley landed on head and/or left shoulder.

The race was won by the stalker “Taker Her Tothe Top” with Xavier Aizpuru up for trainer Jack Fisher.

Arch Kingsley, 41, trains Hunter Forward and only because the jockey he wanted was not available did he decide to ride his own mount. Per a tweet from Sean Clancy - “Sounds like Arch Kingsley is OK.”

Good to hear.

Off topic but good news … From Matt Hegarty/DRF

BC spokesperson Jim Gluckson says that BC Ladies Classic will be restored to BC Distaff “for the foreseeable future.”

Thankfully! To me using the moniker of “Ladies Classic” just sounded so patronizing and chucked out the history of the sport …

Have you checked Amazon or eBay?

There is also from Saratoga Living the Official “Saratoga 150th” Commemorative Book and Guide. I don’t have a copy so I’m not endorsing it but worth a look at just $7.95 and effectively a glossy historic look. If you’re in Saratoga its available just about anywhere.

For 176 pages of great history and horses, beautiful photography and in-depth information on the Saratoga Race Course’s Sesquicentennial Celebration … a high-quality keepsake published by Saratoga Living.

Or you could buy this not-inexpensive book I purchased this spring: on Racecourse Architecture - including Saratoga

NYRA News tweet update mid-day

Archibald Kingsley Jr alert & conscious. “Appears to have no injury other than a possible concussion,” says Gallo of N. #Steeplechase Assoc.

Good to hear all things considered.

BL photo at NSA fence - doing the twist[/QUOTE]

What a wild picture and great positioning by Barbara to capture it!

Per NYRA at the half-way point, business is improving

Total wagering on races at Saratoga Race Course increased compared to 2012 levels through the first half (20 days) of the meet, according to The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA).

All-sources handle, which includes wagers on Saratoga races both on-track and from simulcast outlets nationwide, was $286,598,192, up 0.5 percent from $285,295,757 last year.

On-track handle on Saratoga races totaled $68,809,989, off 2.9 percent from $70,892,924 last year.

Attendance for the first half of the meet was 388,607, a 2.2 percent decrease from 397,330 in 2012. Attendance figures were negatively impacted by less-than-ideal weather on the July 19 opening day program and on Saratoga’s lone Giveaway Day during the first 20 racing dates, July 28.

A bit bizarre that TVG and HRTV both opted to (or were denied access with broadcasting) the Hall of Fame inductions on Friday. What’s wrong with this sport when you have someone like Calvin inducted and that isn’t shared to a wider audience than the attendees?

Some really great racing over the weekend …

Replay: Fri Aug 9, 2013 National Museum of Racing Hall Of Fame Stakes (Grade 2)

Replay: Sat Aug 10, 2013: $500,000 Fourstardave Handicap (Grade 2) - stakes record

Wise Dan not only won the Fourstardave for the second straight year, but he did it carrying 129 pounds, conceding 12 pounds apiece to King Kreesa and third-place finisher Lea.

He also came within 0.58 seconds of the course record, completing a mile in 1:34.00 despite running over a surface softened by heavy rains the previous day and officially rated “good.”

Note - the Sunday’s ( Aug 11, 2013) $200,000 Adirondack Stakes (Grade 2) race contained a fatal breakdown. Hence I won’t link the video here. Charmed Hour broke down and had to be euthanized after the race. Additionally the winner across the wire was DQ’d. Just an ugly race all in all :frowning:

Video replay: Sunday Aug 11, 2013 - $200,000 Saratoga Special (Grade 2) - might be the start of something really interesting.

The winner, Corfu, by a nose just broke his maiden 17 days ago and his owners Magnier/Smith/Tabor are likely to race him in the Grade 1 Hopeful on closing day, Sept. 2.

Y’all are very lucky that I have no idea how to post pictures, or else I’d have one up of the most beautiful face ever to look through a bridle-- Charmed Hour in the paddock before her second (and last race). Lovely pricked ears, beautiful intelligent expression. I always swore I would never watch two year olds run, but a friend wanted to go to see another friend’s entry. If any of you know this filly’s connections, tell them how horribly sad (even traumatized) we both are.

Her owners were rather smitten with her last year (2012) and she was a looker - an entry from their farm website: 8/20/12

Charmed Hour is an easy going filly who is very fond of dinner time. She whinnies excitedly when dinner is being served. She is not as curious as Rosalind or Picolata, but she’ll stand for as much attention as one will give to her. She has sweet habit of lightly pawing at the ground when she is happy and being stroked.

This filly was Jerry’s - Magdalena’s farm manager - pick of the 2012 FT Sale. Her coat and feet look great, she is very relaxed, so all looks good for a nice fall for her on the farm.

This video was of her last October working on the farm - only the 7th day on the turf.

As I said before a very sad turn of events for any owner, the trainer, the staff behind the scenes, the fans …

I was at the track and Charmed Hour was euth’d in front of the section I was sitting in. I never, ever want to see that sight again; I was honestly hysterical when I saw her leg. You have my utmost respect, racing folks; I don’t think I can go back to the track (any track) ever again. ETA: Traumatized is a good way to put it, nutmeg, I am still seeing her and her injury in my head.

She had so much heart, though; she would have crossed the finish line if they hadn’t stopped her.

When did this happen? I was there on Saturday and didn’t hear/see anything. So sad.

It was Sunday. Race 9, Adirondack Stakes.
