O’Neill sends three out in the Sham Stakes.

On January 23rd the Busanda and Silverbulletday, for those keeping an eye on the fillies.

Here is a one for you Shammie.
Nice summary. I will marked it. Thanks.
Top three across the line in Sham look to be competitive for future points, though the DRF doesn’t agree with me. Laoban is a beast.

Big day for prep races and points at the Fairgrounds with Lecomte and Silverbulletday. Good size field for the colts. I’m rooting for Tom Amos to put a colt into the derby though Mo Tom sounds more like a title for a rap song.

Also Gulfstream ’ s Sunshine Millions. Lots going on to compete with NFL play offs. Go colts and fillies.
STAGE PLAY wins in Silverbulletday. Won well within herself by a hand ride to the line. Asmussen has nice CURLIN filly.
MO TOM wins a competitive Lecomte. Tom’s Ready second.
TARIS, as an aside, dominates in the La Canada at Santa Anita. Nice day of racing.
Curlin, IMO, is turning out to be quite the sire…
Nice size field for Monday’s Smarty Jones at OP.

Still at 10 pts for winner. Won’t see 50 pts until end of Feb. Jack Van Berg has the 1A in the Smarty Jones. Old trainers don’t retire they just keep flipping the condition book pages.

And it’s a good thing he became the producer he is. Nothing about Curlin came cheap.

At least he’s in the minority that actually does help pay the bills rather than some of the other pricy racehorses turned breeding stallion that can’t successfully reproduce even part of their on-track abilities…
Jon Court said that DISCREETNESS was on the improve. Won the Smarty Jones by a neck.

Derby standings as of today.
And current oaks standings.
I would be thinking no clear standout as Toews On Ice didn’t deliver as hoped.
Still liking Songbird however for the Oaks
I’ve seen Songbird in person–very, very fine filly. I will be greatly surprised if she doesn’t lead the field or at least end up top three at the Oaks. I want to see Rachel’s Valentina run again if possible before the May meet.
I was impressed with what I saw of Nyquist at the BC. I’d keep an eye on him for Derby…
Good thing NY isn’t hosting any prep races this weekend. Next weekend it’s the Holy Bull at GP and if AQ has dug out the Withers. GP hosts the Forward Gal too. Great name for a race. 60 years ago I use to dream of meeting ladies like that. Don’t tell my wife though.
Haven’t seen snow like this since 87. Brrrrrr. What a mess. Thank goodness for emergency declaration. Our road got plowed right away. Usually our rural route waits 3 to 4 days for VDOT to get to us.
Looks like a short field for the Withers in NY.

Lots of attention on the Holy Bull. Certainly got Louisville papers attention but another short field.
Looks like a great race day on Saturday at GP. Graded turf races compliment the two prep races.

Experimental Free Handicap is of interest but no surprises.
