2016 Olympic Equestrian Events!
I have spent 30 minutes with the DISH people (TV) and 1 hour with the Century Link people (Internet/live stream for USEFnetwork) — and still am no closer to understanding how I can watch the Olympic Equestrian events.

Can someone tell me how live streaming (which shows up on my laptop) happens through my TV? I think that is where I begin to get catatonic.

I have satellite TV which comes in through my dish and then, via cable to my living room, then to my TV.

I have checked with DISH and I have a package which enables me to get the Olympics.

So far, so good.

BUT, how does it leap from my TV to my laptop? That is the part I do not understand, so I cannot figure out how to get the right equipment to make it happen.

As I understand live streaming, the signal comes through my Century Link hook up to my modem/router and then, via wifi, to my laptop. But that kind of live stream has nothing to do with my TV.

Where am I missing the boat? I am sorry to be such a technotard, but I really don’t get it.
Lord Helpus, gonna try to break it down.

There’s two ways to watch the olympics. Navigating to the NBC channel on your Television (this is your DISH subscription at work). Or Navigating to www.nbcolympics.com and having it streamed to you over the internet (Century Link provides you access to the internet).

NBC requires a person watching the olympics at home to have an active television subscription (your DISH subscription). They require this whether you’re watching on the TV, or watching it through the internet (your laptop).

Because NBC requires you to have an active television subscription to watch the olympics on the internet, they need to VERIFY that you in fact have this subscription, the way they do this is by having you input a username and password that is associated with your account before you watch the stream. They ask for this username and password when you click on a stream. Since the olympics are not being broadcast yet, I can’t show you any examples. But it will happen when you go here (once the olympics have started): http://stream.nbcolympics.com/equestrian-eventing-individual-team-dressage-day-1-morning

Normally, when people subscribe to television they don’t have this username/password. Although this varies on who provides your television (Dish, verizon, comcast) etc. Since you’re a DISH user go here to create a username/password: https://my.dish.com/customercare/usermanagement/verify.do.
This username/password also allows you to see your account information via the web by logging into your television provider’s website (in your case the DISH website).

Please let me know if there’s still some confusing bits.

^Great explanation egood!

The one thing that seems like it could still be a source pf problems in this scenario is the username/password authentication with the TV provider i.e. is the NBC stream interacting in real time with the TV provider’s username/password database? If someone has never set up their account with Dish and creates one today, not sure if it would authenticate immediately or if there is some kind of behind the scenes updating periodically taking place.

Thank you so much for the explanation. To make sure I understand it:

 1. I turn on my TV and turn on my DISH receiver.
 2. I go to a certain channel (TBD?) on my TV (by pushing the up/down buttons on my receiver).
 3. Once I am at that channel (something about ch 148 and 149 being “collapsible channels”) I will be asked to input my user name and password [which I have found out!!!]
 4. At that point I will get on the Internet through my laptop and Chrome, and via the downloaded app for NBC sports [I have downloaded the app!!!], I will be taken to a page (on my laptop) which will tell my what sports are currently being live streamed – and I click on “Equestrian”.

Do I (finally) have it right? I guess my confusion resulted from having to put my user name/password into my DISH network account via my receiver’s alphabet option before opening my laptop to actually get the stream via the network app and my Century Link modem/router.

Please tell me I am right…

No need to turn on your TV.

Just navigate to the stream through www.nbcolympics.com or on the app. You’ll be asked to input the username/password there. Then you’ll watch it on your laptop.

LH, I am also a Dish subscriber. I plan to record from channel 105 or where ever USA is. I have already set it up to record on Saturday and Monday, [cross country LIVE! ] I cannot do so for Sunday without getting a large block of stuff. I probably will do anyhow. It looks like from what I have seen, Almost all the equestrian stuff will be on USA.
