2020 Pony Finals Canceled

I agree. The failure to cancel shows that draw entries from all over the country, in the midst of an out of control pandemic, was an inexcusable failure of leadership on USEF’s part. That said, the failure of parents and other responsible adults to refrain from interstate travel with children, for pleasure, during a pandemic, ignoring the advice of public health officials is also very irresponsible.

Lexington now has more cases that they have to trace, as will the states to which infected participants are returning, not to mention the states they traveled through, transportation, motels, airlines, restaurants, etc… This will use up local resources and potentially sicken and kill citizens, whom have been trying to stay safe and have had no say in the matter.

All of this because everyone involved thought that sanctioning and attending these horse shows during a pandemic was a fine idea. The selfishness and/or ignorance exhibited by every adult concerned is appalling.

I’m a parent. I’m in KY. Though I recognize there is a greater risk being here than being home, a show that is out doors, with mask mandates, glove mandates, social distancing mandates, and generally respectful individuals seems less threatening than the horrible adult you’ve made me out to be.

We are going to quarantine when we get home, we have not had any meals at restaurants, and we’ve tried our best to be respectful of our host state. I’ll be honest, I felt much less safe in Kroger than I did at the show.

Hopefully “indoors” follows suit sooner rather than later.

While I’m sure the kids are devastated this is a good life lesson. I’ll hold my tongue on my opinion of USEF for letting it get this far in the first place.

I’m a parent. I’m in KY. Though I recognize there is a greater risk being here than being home, a show that is out doors, with mask mandates, glove mandates, social distancing mandates, and generally respectful individuals seems less threatening than the horrible adult you’ve made me out to be.

I mean no disrespect to you personally, but you do realize that you are in the local KENTUCKY Kroger, that you have traveled from out of state for recreational purposes into their community at a time when Kentucky’s COVID rate is rising and that you are exposing the local people, who have to go to the grocery store and may live with at risk loved ones, to an unnecessary risk? Because you want to attend a Pony show?

It’s really not all about you and your state when you return home. You are only thinking of your home spread of the virus. If you don’t feel safe in the Kentucky Kroger, how do you think the local people feel? Did you quarantine when you arrived in the State? Did you come from a State who’s COVID cases are high? Do you realize that you could be an asymptomatic carrier and sicken or kill others unknowingly? To attend a Pony show?

The press release made it sound like that person was on the show grounds braiding and received news of a positive test result that same day. Which would seem to mean that person was waiting for test results but decided to come to the show and braid anyway?

BTW, there are shows going on in Colorado right now, with many out of state riders there as well.

Aren’t you from Texas? Traveling from that state is just irresponsible unless you quarantined for two weeks. Traveling for funsies is irresponsible anyway. I mean really, feeling unsafe in a grocery store? AFTER you traveled?

When you indulge in recreational travel, at a time when so many people are cognizant that interstate travel is against the advice of public health authorities, even to attend a loved ones funeral or to see your elderly relatives (and people are keeping to those guidelines because of the risk to posed to the health of others) your travel for recreational purposes is indeed a very selfish act.

No , I don’t know your reasons or excuses for recreational travel. I listen to the public health authorities, I don’t make the rules. Can you share how it is that your “choices” are not endangering others?

While I would LOVE to think that people are being “responsible citizens” at these shows, and that mandates (mask, social distancing, etc) would ensure the safety of others, it’s just not what’s happening.

I have seen pictures and heard testimony from those at a show near me; while mostly all people are wearing masks, there are a few who are not. And it is CROWDED; the “no spectator rule”, while a good idea, is not at all being enforced. And as a result, the show is filled up with mom/dad/sister/brother/friends of friends of friends, you get the point.

People are not doing the right thing, even when show mandates are in place. People are gathering from out of state to attend horse shows, and putting many people (including themselves) in danger of contracting a terrible virus, that we still know very little about. I’m not about to play Russian roulette with COVID and hope I get a mild case if I get it. No thanks.

This is why I plan on (and have been) not showing this year, wearing my mask at all times in public, physical distancing, and hunkering down to “ride this thing” out, no pun attended.

Right. This is the problem, but not just for horse shows. There is no way anyone awaiting test results should be out and about at public events. This is what worries me about the whole situation - having to rely on other people to act responsibly.

Own your selfishness, don’t act like you “took precautions” because of you cared about precautions that much you would have stayed home.

My mom couldn’t see her mother in the hospital before she died because she did the right thing. I couldn’t attend my grandmothers funeral because people like you can’t stay home.

It’s much more concerning to me that people are showing up at public events while waiting for test results. That is completely irresponsible. If you had a reason to get tested, you need to quarantine until you get negative results.

I’ll say the same to those people. It’s not a personal attack to express an opinion on someone’s actions. We are still in a pandemic and y’all are acting like it’s cool to travel for fun. Y’all are WHY we haven’t beaten this because you all apparently need to be told by the government. Y’all just can’t do the right thing because YOU think your fine. Screw everyone else.

And this is why I think USEF needs to step up to the plate and cancel the remainder of the 2020 show season. Or at a minimum limit people to showing in their own region. Unfortunately it’s become clear that a number of USEF members and/or their support staff simply can not follow the guidelines. Thus, it’s time for USEF leadership to do the right thing, make the hard decisions, and actually provide leadership to keep their members safe, so there can be a healthy and robust show season in 2021.

In such a life and death situation, a pandemic, some people seem to be unable to comprehend the consequences of their inability to use their brains (or, if they just don’t get it, to follow the advice of scientists and public health officials). I prefer to see it that way, rather than to believe that they know, and that they really don’t care how many people they are potentially infecting.

At this rate, I don’t think I can fool myself for much longer.
