2020 Talent Search Finals

Looks like the flat phase tripped a few riders up, possibly more than in years past. They had to demonstrate haunches-in and shoulder-in through the sitting trot, collected and extended canter, the counter canter and a flying change of lead in front of the judge. As with last year, Dominic Gibbs sits on top going into the gymnastics phase, which is happening now.

Order of go/reverse order of standing can be found here: https://www.phelpssports.com/live-updates-2020-platinum-performance-usef-show-jumping-talent-search-finals-east/

I can’t find the results to the Gymnastics phase anywhere. Anyone know?

Interesting that Augusta Iwasaki decided to do the east final instead of the west. I’m guessing it’s because of travel timing?

Yes. Also the west is not nearly as prestigious as the East… I think there were only around 20 in it. But seeing as she was here for medal finals last week and then goes to Washington finals (also in tryon) and then Maclay finals in Kentucky it makes sense.

I’m pretty sure that way back when (1980s-90s) they restricted entry by zone, so that you couldn’t do that. But I don’t see any mention of that sort of restriction now.

Looks like that in order to qualify for the west finals this year, one needed only to complete a class. (not criticizing that judgment call - these are unusual times)

I really like the course today. It separates out the top contenders with questions that are subtle enough that the less experienced kids/horses are still going to have a positive experience at the end of it. It’s not trappy, but it’s technical.

So many feet in the water though!

Yeah… I feel like a lot of people took the water for granted. Didn’t see a whole lot of correct rides to it until getting into the top 10 (although I missed the first 1/2 of the class, to be fair).

I was about to post and ask if it was just me  I would think that, even if the water wasn’t particularly wide, the placement of it right before a vertical was clearly asking riders to demonstrate a forward ride followed by collection back for the vertical. Quite a few ignored that question.

This! I love the course today but so disappointed to not see more of the riders really riding up to the water.

Can someone please explain how this phase
is scored and judged?

Any word on the final 4? Phelps keeps updating the minute after I ask about finding results so it’s probably there now lol

Interesting. Did I miss something in Dominic’s round that would drop him out of the top 4? I was multitasking so very possible I missed something.

My guess would be foot in the water, LOL—but I missed his trip.

Are we switching horses this year? I know they didn’t do the swap for the WCHR pro challenge due to covid concerns with cross contamination between people and equipment.
