2020 Talent Search Finals

Amazing how talented Natalie Jayne is. I was wondering why Sophie isn’t riding. Isn’t this her last junior year? Seems like she would be aiming for an equitation title.

Same.

The worst is seeing pony riders who are the offspring of people I still think of as pony riders.

I’m pretty sure she’s still riding, or she was very recently. She’s been showing jumpers in the Grand Prix classes. Maybe she decided to focus on that? Just a possibility.

Meanwhile, I did a double take that Maddie Schaefer is an AO now because I still picture her as the cute little kid riding the then-ancient Halcyon Hawthorne around up at the Vermont Summer Festival

Maddie Schaefer seems like a cook kid. Not that I know her but she seems to have a great head on her.

Right?! When she was younger she got bored ringside and came into the starter’s booth with me and asked if she could help me announce. Sure, it’s a quiet morning, half the kids in the ring are your mom’s, come on in. She did a very professional job calling in the back number, the pony, and the kid, and then whispered into the mic, “The best pony.” Stacey made her come out of the booth. She’s a nice kid and it’s nice to see her doing so well, but I’m with you, it’s still weird seeing her on something over 14.2.

Omg. I remember him. I think I knew the person who did him as a green pony.

Similarly, there are a couple of sisters I have known since they were on medium ponies. The older one is probably right on the cusp of being an older amateur, which will be a bad day at Black Rock in my book.

Full disclosure, I remember being just out of college and trying ponies at Stacey’s for a friend (my job was to make sure they could take a joke for friend’s young niece and nephew). Who was in a stroller in the barn? SAM. 🙆

Stacia did a cool round critique of her kids. Great learning tool for those (likely not showing in these finals) who complain they didn’t place well because “I got all my distances!” It’s a great way to see the course and how the top kids negotiate it and how Stacia coaches: https://www.facebook.com/beaconhillshowstables/videos/420748125578297

Also the kids talk about the horses they chose. Nice to have a choice! Lovely, lovely horses: https://www.facebook.com/beaconhillshowstables/videos/936636533412690
