I’m new, just found this forum and have spent the bulk of my day reading all the fantastic information shared here!
So I decided to jump in with a question of my own:
I recently purchased a Welsh/GRP mare. She turned 3 in April and currently measures 12.3. Her sire is Telynau Royal Charter and her dam is a 13.3 GRP (no official pedigree on the dam, but she might be by Downland Mohawk?) and I am wondering when she should be done growing and what her full grown height might be? I know it’s all speculation, but being new to the pony world (I’m a long time TB owner) I’d love any insight you might have
Thanks in advance!
If she’s a coming 4 year old, you’re probably getting pretty darn close to the mature height now. I wouldn’t expect much, if any, growth after this point.
I would have to agree that she is likely done growing.
Thanks for the replies!
I had heard that GRP’s mature later and can continue to grow until they are 5? When I had her vetted a few months ago, he said he thought she’d grow a bit (between 1" - 2")…
Thanks again
I’d say she has a bit more height in there.
Certainly anything is possible! But I would be surprised if she grew ANYwhere near 2 more inches. Another half inch? Yep, I could see that, possibly. But more than that, I’d be surprised. Not that I’ve never been surprised before. LOL
I would speculate less than 1 inch additional probably closer to 1/2 of an inch. All of my GRPs have annual measurements in their passports - and between 3 and 5 years all grew less than 1 inch. My current 3yo is 148cm and I hope he doesn’t grow any more! It isn’t true necessarily that GRP’s grow for a longer time than any other pony - especially since many of them have quite a bit of Welsh in them. You can only look to the height of the parents - and with a 13.3 hand dam and a 13.1 hand sire - you are not looking at adding much height.
My purebred Connemara mare grew about 1.5 inches between the fall of her 3 year old year and the fall of her 4 year old year. Everyone told me not to worry, but she is definitely right on the edge of 14.2 right now without shoes on, she was 14.1/2 when I bought her.
fwiw her sire is 13.3 and her dam is 14.1 but her damsire is 15 hands. You just never know.
I knew I came to the right place to ask
So, if I were to consider breeding her in the spring, what size stallion should I be looking for if I want to get a good-sized medium?
Thanks for all the insight!
But Connemaras are a completely different ball game. It’s like comparing apples and oranges. A lot of Connemara lines will not finish growing until 4 or 5. Purebred Section A and B Welsh Ponies often finish growing in their 2-year-old years…some will grow just a bit more. GRP tend to have a lot of Welsh in their backgrounds.
This is the first I have heard anything like this. Actually I have heard quite the opposite. Also, both her parents are much smaller than her.
There’s a reason ponies have to be 6 years old to get a perm card, because you don’t know.
The reason ponies can’t get a permanent measurement card until age 6 is mainly because there are many crossbred and unpapered ponies in the hunter pony world in particular. Crossbreds tend to have horse genetics which CAN cause a pony to keep growing longer. Purebred Welsh tend to be finished growing for the most part by age 3 as Gretchen and Tracy said.
Royal Jewel, since you are new to this forum, now is a good time to gently inform you that PICTURES ARE REQUIRED especially when we’re talkng PONIES! We think and advise much better when we can see pictures of the ponies
PS. There really isn’t an official rule per se, but… we LOFF pictures!
Pictures? Absolutely!
Hopefully I linked this right: http://i52.tinypic.com/344sdvn.jpg
I think she’s lovely (obviously, since she’s mine ;)) but I’d love any opinions!
I have also been told PUREBRED Connemaras stop at 3 also, unless they don’t. Or maybe they never do. Oh who knows.
fwiw, the OPs pony is NOT a purebred. Hence my point.
Well, they definately will keep growing wider .
Congrats on your Charter baby! I have owned 5 of them. I would say you might get another half inch, an inch would be generous. You should ask Tammy though. She would be most helpful. None of the Telynau stallions are all that big or known for throwing size. I want to say Charter is the biggest of the boys here in the US. I would think how much size and horse blood is in the dam side would be a factor. Some of my Charter babies ended up smaller than the dam, some a lot bigger.
She is a really pretty mare. I tend to agree that you may get an inch or so…but not much more.
As far as stallion choices, you might want to look at my stallion, Burberry. He is 14hh and currently at the 30 day stallion testing.
Enjoy your mare!
We have GRP’s and GRP crosses and Welsh crosses. We see very little growth after 3. Some is due to the muscling thta occurs when they go into under saddle work - but that’s usually under an inch.
I have a GRP (Black Delight)XConnXTB mare who’s put on 2" in the last 18 months (she’s 4 this year).
CNM161 has a welshXGRP (also Black Delight), also a 4 yo. I believe that her mare has put on close to an inch in the last year. Maybe CNM will chime in to verify…
