I always thought coats for the hunter ring had 3 buttons whereas the 4 buttons were more dressage or jumper type coats, but lately I’ve been seeing more and more coats with 4. Is this the new trend or was I wrong?
it’s a trend, i think it came along with some of the new european brands like animo, equiline, etc.
You can wear whatever you like. People are choosing whatever looks best on them. Personally, I find the Four button costs to be more flattering and elongating - I traded my three button models in for ones with four buttons instead.
Yes, I agree that this started when the european and soft-shell style jackets came into fashion. But its fine, no one notices how many buttons you have on your jacket when you’re in the ring.

unless they are scooping you up, in which case you’re already out of the ribbons

Also with new lower rise breeches, a lower set fourth button often leaves less of an unattractive gap of shirt sticking out.
I am a judge, and I notice. I do not like them, but it would never have an effect of your placing. But there is a little voice way in the back of my head saying that you are not a traditionalist.
It doesn’t look like it hurt John French any. Of course, if you ride like him you can probably get away with it

yes…it would never affect my placings based on the horse or riders performance, but I just wanted to put it out there that some judges do notice.

or whatever is in fashion. I’ve seen plenty of 4 button coats that look terrible.

I still prefer a 3 button coat but they are getting harder and harder to find. Good thing I have about 9 wool coats. It is a shame for my coat hoarding tendencies, though. No more new ones for me.
I rode with his mother when I was a kid. Too bad I didn’t stick with her. Maybe you’d be talking about my fashion choices!
