$500 just to look? WTF?

We used to take a boat over to the power plant outlet and go “hot tubbing”

There is something about this mare, maybe it’s the way she looks at the camera like she’s trying to say “Take me home!” but I think she’s cute, tolerant and looks very sweet…

Question, if you get a mare from them, and come to find out that – Ooops! Someone forgot to shut the gate again! – and she’s in foal, do they ding you for the foal too???

Some people on this thread have said thousands of times over priced cr*p, and others have said horses are selling for $1000. I still have not been wandering around the site in question, but from comments here, and what I know from purchasing a PMU youngster, it sounds like most of the “charges” are from selling VERY lightly handled horses. When I purchased my youngster from a local farm, she had not been trimmed, and I am sure it would have cost me plenty if I wanted it done right away. She was just not handled enough to even make an attempt. Charges for grooming may just be telling the purchaser that it is time that they just don’t have, and it will cost you if you really want those services (tranq from a vet for a trim?) Ours was delivered, but I guess I could see “encouragement” to bring an appropriate trailer (stock).

I totally believe in helmets, but when was the last time you saw a western rider in one - even a kid? Different world. When I worked for a period in central Virginia - just 70 miles south of my farm, I was totally shocked at the step back in time. It was like I had gone back to the 60s in SO many things. 95% of the people smoked, but here, I would guess we have about 5% smoking - just amazing the difference in attitude about health and safety.

Haven’t we always known that veterinary medicine, and any medicine, not just pre-purchase exams are more and more anti-malpractice? And I have to agree, most people get scared off by a slight finding unless they are experienced at buying and vetting. The vetting horror stories I have seen are frightening. Hurtful & frustrating to both buyer and seller.

Belladonna and Carol, there’s a nuclear power plant in Louisa County? And no one told me!

It would totally be old home week for me, because I moved from So. MD last year, and they have a nuclear power plant at Calvert Cliffs.

Yeah, nothing like boating past the plant, and seeing the waters churning and steam rising. And yet, they say it’s perfectly fine for everyone and all the critters living around the plant.

Remind me not to eat anything that’s caught in the water in Louisa County…

Very poor pony indeed:no:

The occasional three-eyed fish never hurt anybody. Besides, if you don’t, you’ll be causing hardship and economic loss to fishers in Louisa County. For shame, you gleeful bully:no: .

Yup, the North Anna Power station.
Mr P and most of our friends have long term connections with the US Navy nuclear power program so we are pretty comfortable living near it. The power company tests the water quite frequently though thee is some mercury and PCB contamination. Lake Anna supplies cooling water.

We are on the “cold” side but have friends on the “warm” side which circulates the cooling water from the plant.

The 45 acres for our farm is by the plant, but has no lake access.

Astraled, I’ve had plenty of practice causing economic hardship to other folks, especially oyster fishermen. Can’t stand the nasty, slimy things! Like eating snot on the halfshell, puke! :dead:

So you see, my gleeful, evil power extends not just to Virginia, but all of Maryland too! Tremble at my power to wreak havoc!!!

And all this from Appalachia, where apparently I use an outhouse…

But don’t you think that her website statement is insulting to vets and buyers alike? I think what bothered me about her website was the condescending/patronizing manner in which most of it was written. Her own words are what turned me off from ever buying a horse from her, not what was said in this thread.

Many veterinarians are schooled in malpractice avoidance techniques and may render vet exams in an attempt to avoid any liability, or in an effort to cover any possible difficulties in the future development of a young horse. People who do not purchase horses often are not able to interpret the results of such exams.

Well, I’m just about 500 miles from her, but I’d rather be reviled by someone like this than recommended by her, I think.

Okay, Lake Anna, yes I’ve heard about it. I have friends that trail ride there, and they love it. We’re actually planning a ride there sometime this summer.

Believe me, I lived within 20 miles of Calvert Cliffs and never once gave it a second thought. Although seeing the hot water spewing out of the pipes is enough to give one pause, especially with the waters moving so swiftly, and the steam rising. Almost like an aquatic gate to Hell.

OMG :(:(:(:frowning: This is really sad… Poor poor pony :frowning:

Fox Wood Farm, I’d be the first to agree that not every post here was nice, respectful and polite – although by FAR the worst in that regard was a particular VSH supporter.

I checked this thread on Thursday, I believe, when someone sent in an alert on it – it was 7 or 8 pages, mostly of people saying some variation of  in regard to the $500-to-go-look policy posted on the website.

When I next looked at the thread on Saturday, it was 20+ pages. People found the rest of the website… and a lot more material to  over.

There is no disputing that the vast majority of the stated policies are way out of the norm for the sport horse world, and the tone was a bit… umm… odd. Thus there is no reason to expect that it would NOT generate a lot of discussion on a sport horse board. It is a legitimate topic of discussion, even if some of the posts have come close to crossing the line.

There were also plenty of people, btw, who asked the supporters very nice, polite, and respectful questions – whether they had paid the deposit to go look, whether they supported such a policy – that went unanswered in favor of (rather rudely, in some cases) chastising others for discussion of the topic at all. Neither “side” is completely innocent here.

Have BBers been poking fun? Sure, as is their right. Have they been critical? Yes, as is their right.

But the thread was on its way to burning itself out (especially once most of the material was removed from the website). In much the same way as, say, the McDonalds coffee lady was the butt of all the late night comedy shows for a week or so and then disappeared from the radar, this thread was very active for a few days and would shortly have died a natural death.

This board does not have a policy against discussing individuals (although we do usually try to steer discussion back to issues once people have had their say about an individual). You are allowed to say that you think a particular rider or trainer or breeder is awful, even if that big-name R/T/B happens to be a COTH advertiser… or contributor. (Ever read a thread on here about GM?)

If you don’t think people should be discussing an individual, you’re welcome to say so and you’re welcome to alert the moderators. However, you have to be willing to accept that we make the call, not you, and if we decide the thread is OK to continue, well, you have choice not to read the thread.

The overall tone of this thread has not been to make ad hominem attacks on a person. (Despite Dagan’s attempts.) No one, that I have seen, has made assertions equivalent to “Hey, you’re fat and ugly and can’t ride!” (Which is my standard definition of a personal attack. )

People have been commenting on the stated policies of a business that advertises those policies to the public. That’s fair game for discussion.

(Although since people are pretty much done discussing the business and the policies, and have instead moved on to discussing WHETHER they should be discussing the business or the policies, it leads one to wonder whether the discussion would stop altogether if people stopped posting what others shouldn’t be discussing…)

But we do have a new COTH vocabulary word/phrase:

Tortilla Interference…or is that Interfence. Seen it both ways. We need to clarify that.

Goes well with a dead cactus dontcha think?

J Swan, I’ve seen plenty of YOUR posts that violated Rule #1.

You don’t feel anyone should be discussing this topic. We get it. Unfortunately, you don’t get to make that call. Such is life… deal with it.

As I said previously, there was nothing wrong with you sending in an alert. I did take exception to your outright DEMAND that the thread be closed – as I said, not your call.

No one has violated your privacy, just like no one on this thread urged anyone to harrass anyone else, and just like no one made any unfounded allegations of illegal activity. But keep right up with those exaggerated claims if you think they’re workin’ for ya.

edit

Well if it was old fish…remember Merry’s old tag line “friends don’t let friends eat fish tacos”?

this isn’t helping me with getting these invoices out, you know.

BTW I am the boss/secretary/accounting department and sales force so I’m not cheating my employer out of anything…just myself.

Well I do agree he is massive…

Just wanted to quote this, as no one commented and I think it got lost in the way side. I think we have identified Dagan, at least… A happy customer with a dirty mouth, perhaps?

Oops, summerhorse, you beat me to it by, apparently, less than a minute!

I was thinking maybe Dagan was Liz, but perhaps you’re right. One very satisfied customer with extreme potty-mouth.
