8lb pup ate about 2 weeks of birth control pills

sometime in the past 3 hours…It’s a 28 pack, so the last week shouldn’t contain anything I believe. Which cuts it down to maybe 7-10 active BC pills. I’m not home but I had the daughter give him a capful of hydrogen peroxide to try to induce vomiting. He hasn’t yet…told her another capful in 15 minutes if he doesn’t by then. Everything I can find says he should be fine, I’m just worried cuz he’s not very big.

Have you called a vet? If the pills were swallowed long enough ago, vomiting will not help as they have already been absorbed.
Make sure you tell the vet what kind of birth control it is, as I’d imagine different types have different effects/some may be more dangerous than others.

Yes I called the vet, they said to make him vomit and if he didn’t to call poison control. My daughter called and said he just vomited after the second dose of hydrogen peroxide.

My 25 lb dog (male) ate an entire pack of birth control pills when I was first married. My vet laughed and said he would be fine, but might bark in a high voice for a while…and then went into peals of laughter. This was years ago, but I really don’t think they’re harmful…and BC is a much lower dose today than it was in the 70’s.

He might get manboobs! Oh the horror!

The pills that have iron pills on the non-contraceptive days can be very dangerous, but I don’t know if they do that these days.

Careful with hydrogen peroxide…Ive seen a lot of dogs come in with gastric bleeding and esophageal ulcers because of it. Fresh hydrogen proxide will especially do this, yet older doesn’t often induce vomiting. I’d keep an eye on appetite to make sure the hydrogen peroxide didn’t irritate the GI tract…maybe a few days of sulcrate to coat just incase

Its something a lot of vets still recommend giving at home (and totally worth it if your dog ate something toxic and you cant get the dog to the vet for a safer emetic) but just be aware that there may or may not be further issues.

Thanks! After he threw up she said he seemed totally normal. Last night, he ate and drank like normal and you would never know anything had occurred. Will keep an eye on his appetite/belly though.

scary–I’d be worried too, and am so glad he is fine after that mega dose of hormones!
